Cat and Girl vs the Merfolk
Cat and Girl walk down a bust street. Splash! Girl wades into the water. "How long have we been wet?" Cat asks. "Always-", replies Girl, "you weren't paying attention." "I guess I just got used to it" says Cat. "Is it getting deeper? Should we worry"? They wade further in. "It's OK," says Girl, "class is fluid." "I should have brought galoshes," Cat says. "Personal responsibility can only go so far" replies Girl. "It's all we can do to keep our own heads above water." "What's below the water," Cat wonders. "I should have brought my scuba gear" Girl says. "Personal responsibility can only go so far" says Cat. BUB BUB BUB, he sticks his head in the water. "Eventually the layers of sediment," Girl says, "hardens into caste." "WOW you don't want to be in there" says Cat. The water arounds them hardens, and they are stick in place. They look at the wasteland around them. A hand with a coffee cup peeks out of the newly hardened ground. A hat sits on a mound. "Looks OK up here" Girl says. Cat looks over - "Ooooh free hat!"

Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?
A 1930s newspaper clipping headlined:

“Mechanical Man” Servant of Mankind and Not Oppressor, Avers Inventor.

Below, a photograph of a man in a suit and bow tie standing with a crude robot, essentially a radio mounted in the torso of a humanoid robot made out of what looks like flat pieces of sheet metal. The robot and inventor are posing in a classroom setting, with an American flag, a blackboard, and some sort of 18th century portrait of a man.
Flat screen! It's what they're doing in tvs by the road these days

about how he SECRETLY FUNDED CALENDAR REFORM and introduced a 13-MONTH INTERNATIONAL FIXED CALENDAR AT KODAK IN 1928, which the company CONTINUED TO USE UNTIL 1989, 67 years after his DEATH
KEEP HONKING! I'm reading GEORGE EASTMAN'S WIKIPEDIA PAGE

I do somehow deeply believe that speech bubbles that meet the edges of a panel are coarse and simple while speech bubbles entirely within a panel are sophisticated and intellectual

Wouldn't it be nice if there was an easy-to-follow feed of your favorite #TopatoCo #creators? Well, after conferring with the rotted shadow creature that lives in the crawlspace above the employee bathrooms, we have one now!

In conclusion, NYC schools are a land of inequality! Please consider me for your lecture series the next time you need to clear out a room
Overall about 6% of kids go to SHSs
This eliminates a LOT of schools in Queens and South Brooklyn that have both zoned and screened programs - there's just no way to tell how the kids in the zoned programs (which tend to have seats available) are doing vs the kids in screened programs (which can have 20 applicants per seat)
1 Yorkville E, UES 26%
2 Spruce St, FiDi 24%
3 Shuang Wen, LES 23%
4 78Q, LIC 15%
5 Russel Sage, Forest Hills 12%
6 IS 289, Battery Park 11%
7 William Carr, Flushing 11%
8 IS 237, Flushing 10%
9 JHS 88, Park Slope 9%
10 IS 318, Williamsburg 9%
Schools that send the largest share of their students to SHSs, had no academic screened programs and did not fill all their seats in 2024-2025
Feeder schools attract a lot of kids - Lab Middle and East Side had 3 applicants/seat. That means it's hard to get in if you're in-district and impossible if you're not. Since 6 of these schools are in Mnhttn's D2 that leaves a lot of people out. What schools sending kids to SHSs admitted everyone?
This does not include two charter schools that would have placed on the list - Brooklyn Prospect 15.2 at 23% and Success Academy Upper West with 24% - because I don't think charter admission and retention policies can be fairly compared to public schools with open admissions
