These beautiful animals started my love for genetics and genomics.
Giraffes were long considered one species. Now a leading conservation organization recognized them as four. And three of them are in big trouble. Here's my story. Gift link: nyti.ms/45LqNa3

The Young Scientist Program & WashU DBBS had a great turnout yesterday at our Scientist in Training event. We gave out school supplies and did some fun experiments for St Louis students, to make going back to school easier for those affected by the tornado in May.

Firing scientists, cancelling grants will damage our health, economy
My path to becoming a researcher and scientist would not have been possible without hard work and federal programs that trained young scientists, including the National Science Foundation (NSF).

"According to demographic data NSF collects on all its principal investigators (PIs), 58% of the grants canceled to date were led by women, although only 34% of the total pool of active NSF grants have women as PIs."

NSF’s grant cuts fall heaviest on scientists from underrepresented groups
Projects to broaden participation were cut disproportionately—and were often led by Black scientists, women, and those with disabilities

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

An important point getting overlooked:

When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies.

They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

I created a brief spreadsheet of reductions I've heard of so far. Any additions you know of (especially if you have the links/receipts) would be great: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
