This was Conor Gearty only a week or so ago at @prospectmagazine.co.uk on ECHR withdrawal and the Palestine Action ban.
🎧: The Prospect Podcast is back from summer break! On today’s episode, Conor Gearty explains what’s at stake if Britain leaves the ECHR, and reacts to the Palestine Action ban.
Are we losing our civil liberties?

Very sad to hear of the untimely death of Conor Gearty, a lovely individual, one of our finest legal academics, and a central figure in promoting human rights worldwide.

Awful news about the death of the great Conor Gearty.

Perhaps the kindest and most encouraging law professor imaginable.

A dreadful loss to the study of civil liberties and constitutional law.
Conor Gearty was one of the UK’s foremost legal scholars and public intellectuals. A true human rights defender and great friend, he lived the values that so many talk about. His loss is devastating to our community. Sending all love and solidarity to his partner Aoife and entire family.

...They should perhaps remember that we are all foreigners, almost everywhere, including in other member states, and there is no such thing as democracy without the rule of law. ' #ShamiChakrabarti at @coe.int
'...today's debate seems more about the challenge from those, even perhaps amongst us who seek to diminish convention rights, not enhance them.

They want to clip the wings of the court and refuse rights to non-citizens...
'It's one thing to be a threat to property..to be prosecuted & ..even imprisoned...but it's another thing altogether to proscribe a whole group and that means anyone..vaguely associated with it, to brand them terrorists' #ShamiChakrabarti on the proposed proscription #PalestineAction #TodayProgramme

Couldn’t be prouder of these brilliant archaeologists who graduated from our MA yesterday! I love Birkbeck grad so much. They’re already on to such wonderful things, and an honour to be there on the first day of ceremonies for our new President, Shami Chakrabarti (!)
