Such clever use of ‘Tense’, Carolyn!

The reflection recalls a beautiful moment, yet acknowledges (with regret) contrast… and even in the retelling still holds onto that self-deprecation. The experience runs deep.

The final word, ‘imperfect’, seems to underline it even more.

It’s brilliant and it’s great to draw the attention of people like me, who missed it at the time, but would enjoy it as much as I do 😊

A #LifttotheSky for this amazing collection of sonnets by the brilliant Paul Brookes @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social who contributes so much to the #poetrycommunity. Published in 2022, but new to me, it explores myth and legend with grace and wit

Bit late to the party with this, work & family stuff has kept me from my writing lately! So #ImperfectMe is the ideal theme. This is a WIP, trying to get at how it feels when we isolate ourselves from what feels like an unfriendly world.

LINES OF DEFENCE
by Clare O'Brien

My hide set hard.
I’m fiercely solid, not a crack
to betray my weakness, defences
holding when the nightmares come.
Nothing can break me, nothing shake
my still resolve. My guards don’t sleep.
Unblinking eyes patrol between
the towers and the searchlights,
looking for incursions. I find nothing.
Nothing finds me.
