I was sorry to hear of the passing of mighty Jane Gardam. I've loved her books. If you haven’t read the Old Filth trilogy, you’re in for rare a treat. Line to line never a false note, and she had such a wondrous, unflinching view of character. Rip, great writer.

Ending the week thinking of the folks in the various agencies, labs and offices whose jobs have been haphazardly cut or furloughed by the gratuitously cruel doge buzzsaw. How are they paying for their rents, groceries, kids? How are they dealing with the stress? We are better than this.

To ask teenagers from 55 countries to write of secrets is to be let into worlds that are heartbreaking & heart-redeeming. These are dark times, but these writers aren’t afraid of the dark. They use it to make art that is tender and wise. I loved working with them.

Thank you, @anneapplebaum.bsky.social for clearly naming the tragic and terrifying situation we find ourselves in.
"No one, apparently, is willing to prevent a single man from destroying the world economy, wrecking financial markets, forcing this country and other countries into recession if that’s what he feels like doing when he gets up tomorrow morning"
