Of all the major cities in the United States, Chicago provides the greatest value, with robust amenities and culture without correlated housing costs. But if Chicago wants to retain that status, some things need to change.

Commentary: Make 2026 the year to achieve real progress on reforming housing affordability

Breathless coverage of one person injured, not killed, on a CTA train, vs. a brief on Page 9 when two people are killed on the road. That’s because road death happens ALL THE TIME - 3 1/2 road fatalities per day in Illinois.
It looks like the number of transit riders killed this year is one …

Went to see some of the completed (but not open) Monon Corridor stations. Big video coming right after these finally open sometime in Q1 of 2026!

Check out this 1923 transit plan commissioned by the Chicago City Council. We use to be insanely ambitious. A network like this would've supported Paris-level population densities.

It's never too late!

I love it when our elected representatives waste shit tons of money undoing changes that improve safety for all road users in order to make it easier for drivers to turn fast and park.

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

Not that this won’t affect us too, but it’s very good that Illinois has established dedicated state funding for transit to help insulate from this. We’re investing in the future vs regressing to 1950s ways of thinking about transportation

Kinda cool that Galesburg, a city of about 30,000 in western Illinois with 3 daily trains to Chicago and a fixed bus route system, has a vision for a downtown transit center next to the Amtrak station. And now Galesburg Transit has sustainable state funding!

Possibly my favorite thing about living car free is that it’s a huge 🖕 to the horrible horrible fossil fuel industry
Your daily reminder that the fossil fuel industry is propped up by billions of dollars in U.S. government subsidies and a multimillion dollar campaign to spread climate disinformation. 💵

Harlem Avenue could be one of the most productive city-suburban bus routes ever if we ever stopped arbitrarily designing bus routes around city/suburban boundaries
Do you ever think about how the bus route that connects with the MD-W, UP-W, Green Line, Blue Line, and BNSF, and also is almost always a Top-5 Pace ridership route, ends in a random parking lot instead of the CTA rail terminal and international airport three miles away? Because I do, often

Center-running, electrified bus lanes on Van Ness Avenue (US-101) in San Francisco. Two general traffic lanes and a parking lane on either side. This would do wonders on so many streets in Chicago & motivate so many more people to choose transit

This blows. Not only are we losing a 130-year-old church, but in return we're getting just four homes on a site that's almost half an acre and only a 10 min walk to the Blue line.

The underlying zoning is RS-3, and it's just a lot easier to build SFHs by right than contend with a rezoning.
