Never heard of this podcast until just now and based on these clips alone I nominate them to host and moderate the first Democratic primary debate

Also to the extent access gets you any information beyond what’s in a press release, it’s information that you’re being given because the people who gave you access want it to come out, misinformation and propaganda rather than news

Yes but Mejia had a reputation already as a progressive candidate in earlier races, while Beutner has been more of a cipher, I never really got a read on him tbh

I’d be happy to be wrong and there is plenty of space to the left of Bass so we’ll see how it plays out, but sounds like he’s running as a moderate and a watchdog on wasteful spending, which often signals a stealth-mode Republican in LA
carcieri.bsky.social
Feels like Beutner is probably to the right of Bass, I’d like to see a serious challenger to her left

Similar dynamics seem likely to develop with Trump as ‘26 midterms approach and half a dozen Republican Senators declare their own presidential campaigns, which is probably why Miller and other dead-enders are making increasingly desperate attempts at big moves this year

They only live to get radical. They don't have any real understanding of the sea, so they'll never get the spiritual side of it.

Purely as a matter of political rhetoric, it is self-defeating to talk up the importance and legitimacy of the opposing party when they are going around accusing your own side of stealing the election, trying to destroy America, etc

Biden made a classic Dem error, viewing McConnell’s refusal to hold a confirmation vote primarily as a personal affront to Garland, rather than as a partisan power play, and thought he was settling a score by making him AG even though it was basically a gift to Trump
carcieri.bsky.social
Garland was a weak compromise even as a judge, Obama nominated him to SCOTUS as an olive branch to McConnell in the hopes of getting an up or down vote in the GOP Senate, it was total malpractice to make him AG

Portland punches way above its weight like that, probably more than any other mid-size US city except maybe New Orleans

Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elvis, Elton John, Bob Dylan, I’m sure many more have all sold more albums as solo artists. You could maybe argue album sales aren’t the right metric for artists today though
carcieri.bsky.social
Another path might involve a Dem adopting the same approach to an imperial presidency as Trump, incentivizing Republicans to join with institutionalist Dems to curtail executive power
carcieri.bsky.social
He’s not there to present legal analysis, he’s answering her question in a way that communicates his values, which seems like a good instinct in a political candidate

They imagine a swing voter as a cross-pressured moderate who will be persuaded by whatever side seems most reasonable, when the reality is most swing voters aren’t paying attention to policy debates and only wake up for sensational controversies that cross over into mainstream discourse

Surprising to discover that the hardest part about trying to be brave is that sometimes it feels virtually indistinguishable from being stupid.

Not surprised by anything Trump is doing but I think I underestimated the extent to which elected Democrats would roll over for it

Thanks! I’ve been to Bade Miyaan but none of the other options you named, we’re now in Kamla Mills about to get a drink

I stopped by the brewery next door afterwards which was a better place to wait until it stopped raining, but yeah lots of interesting options in the area, would love any recommendations for tonight!

Thought I would swing by the Bombay Yacht Club while in Mumbai like I’m the Protagonist in Tenet but of course it’s members only and I can’t get in so ended up settling for the Starbucks across the street

Yeah I was going to say at least Schumer wants to make the Baileys happy
carcieri.bsky.social
Schumer also seems aware that he’s from a different era with different priorities while Jeffries just thinks it is cool and savvy to sell out the base

This is why my advice to young people is always to study whatever fascinates you. You’ll probably work harder/learn more if you’re actually interested, and the work habits and study skills you develop are likely to be more helpful to you than your expertise, no matter what happens in the future
