it made me feel oddly "seen" to learn that Foucault was a devoted member of the burgeoning BDSM fetishist scene in San Fran during the late 70s-80s. although his views on Sade changed, he was living a very "sadean" (at least, in today's popular sense) life.

i think you're very much onto something by drawing a parallel between Foucault's route from the 1960s student leftist movement, to neoliberalism in his later life. but i've only read Miller's very interesting biography of him, and Discipline and Punish.
