Congratulations to UNB student Heather Perry, who was awarded the 2025 Bud and Peggy Bird Scholarship.

Heather is studying the different life stages of Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi river to evaluate the response to thermal stress and predation risk.

📢 New paper alert! 📢

CRI researchers just published a new paper comparing reproductive success of supplemented and wild Atlantic Salmon. The findings can help us better understand how to optimize supplementation programs to increase populations of Atlantic Salmon.

CRI Director Jen Lento took part in a workshop last week in Switzerland that included the IUCN GLOSAM task force and World Water Quality Alliance's Biodiversity and Biological Monitoring and Assessment Workstream. Tthey worked to develop globally-harmonized bioassessment protocols for invertebrates.

Meet Kerstyn Dobbs, a PhD candidate at UNB. Kerstyn is identifying fish species that mussels in the lower Wolastoq watershed rely on to complete their lifecycle, using innovative techniques to uncover these host relationships. This work is critical to mussel conservation.

Fieldwork season is here! 🐟💦
Alex Haynes MacDonald and Drew Saxon enjoyed a sunny first field day as summer students with the Linnansaari Lab. They worked on the beautiful Miramichi River, performing maintenance on the acoustic telemetry station receivers, used to track fish movements.
The decline in Atlantic salmon populations in the Miramichi River is a cause for concern.

The North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC) has now developed a 5-year strategic plan in response to DFO's national salmon strategy.
