@kin110uofr.bsky.social Week 8. As discussed in class sports can be a great platform for social justice even when at the time it may be seen as deviance. Jesse Owen’s famously won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Doing this as a black man in the 30’s in front of a facist regime.
This is exactly where my mind went as well. Celebrating him playing through a serious injury will no doubt have a trickle down affect into minor hockey players ignoring or hiding injuries.
@kin110uofr.bsky.social Health and sport. The NHL and hockey culture in general has had a long history of overlooking and ignoring injuries. Often being proudly refered to as a 'mans sport' it is not uncommon for hockey players at any level to downplay or even ignore both minor and major injuries.
The fact the at the NHL even had a dress code requiring players to wear suits points to an old fashioned societal expectation of men and how the should present themselves.
Auston Mathews of the Toronto maple leafs has made fashion a large part of his personal brand. This year with the NHL removing the dress code many people are looking forward to seeing how he challenges the norms around men’s clothes.
Yeah I’m not a massive tennis fan myself but getting to hear about and watch a young Canadian succeed was awesome. Especially since she did it on Canadian soil.
Mboko is a rising star in womens tennis and 2025 was her biggest year yet: she won 22 consecutive matches to start the year, was ranked in the top 200 in the world for the first time, and she won her first major tournament at the Canadian Open Championship in Montreal.
Victoria Mboko was one of the best stories to come out of Canadian athletics this summer. Her family hails from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and she was born in the USA but her family moved to Toronto when she was 2 months old. www.sportsnet.ca/tennis/longf...

I am a massive rider fan, my family has had season tickets since I was three years old. As I move away from my family and begin working full time it is unlikely that I will have the free time or disposable income to buy my own season tickets.
As an official I experience a lot of complaining from other refs about neck guards. In my opinion while not lifesaving by any means the benefits of a neck guard far outweigh any discomfort.
This change was long overdue but even still hockey sask faced backlash, especially from long time officials who were against the mandate. This is a step forward for the saftey of not just young people participating in the sport but for the saftey of all.
In the winter of 2023 Sask Hockey Madated that all officials where neck guards while on the ice surface. Most Officials in Canada are under 18 and until this point it was common to have children as young as 13 be on the ice without this vital peice of equipment. www.ckom.com/2023/11/26/s...
Saskatchewan official doesn’t notice a difference while wearing a neck guard
Saskatchewan hockey officials now must wear neck guards.

Manon Is an under appreciated Canadian Hero. Her story of perseverance needs to be talked about more, she is in the conversation for top 10 Canadian goalies of all time and that is a prestigious list.
This article discusses Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon. Who has been spotted multiple times on the sidelines of games wearing a headset and discussing strategy. She is drawing a lot of attention for being so involved specifically as a female owner. www.cbc.ca/news/world/c...
Colts CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon is going viral. But is it her headset, or that she's a woman? | CBC News
The Indianapolis Colts won their second game of the new NFL season Sunday — their first 2-0 start since 2009 — but that's not the only reason the internet is abuzz about the team.

After discussion in class I understand how some could define poker as a sport. However for me I have trouble looking past the luck elements as well as the relative ease to play at the highest level in comparison to traditional sport.
I agree with you on the physical activity portion, but I wonder if “gets your heart rate up” is to lose of a definition. watching a movie can get your heart rate up but I don’t think anyone would argue that it constitutes a sport.
Poker is not a sport. It is an activity that requires a level of skill but to act like luck does not play a factor is ridiculous. I also beleive that poker lacks the physical aspect required to be a sport.
The definition of sport is a complicated question but one that I think is ultimately unimportant. It seems unlikely that a true consensus can ever be reached on what is or isn’t a sport. As long as everyone has their own personal definition and is willing to hear each other out. Thats what matters.
