Since I’m in Mississippi it’s looking like my time on BlueSky is coming to a close. That’s unfortunate. Lots of stuff I could say about the current Miss. state government, but I’ll just leave it there.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.
I’m still able to access Bluesky at 6:13pm CDT and I definitely have a Mississippi IP. Maybe they’ll catch up to me soon and block my access. Hope not.
I know. Ought to be another way….
I want solar power; I want wind power; I want all the other renewable power sources. Why cannot the idiots in charge see the advantage of multiple power sources? To the long-term advantage of everyone!
I feel sorry for you! I didn’t think we’d ever get fiber but our electricity provider (which we only have due to the REA push in the 1930s and 40s) partnered with an ISP a few years ago. Like Michael said, if you don’t have it now; getting it in the future seems unlikely. And that is sad.
I think our ping times are usually in the 4-6ms range.
Cleo sleeping while I work in the shop. She’s good company and the noise does not seem to bother her.
We also had Viasat with all its problems and high prices. Then went over to AT&T wireless at some point. Better and cheaper than Viasat; but still flaky. We now have 1/2 Gbps for $74/month. Full 1 Gbps is available for a bit more but the slower speed seems okay for our purposes for now.
Same here. We got fiber under the same program. Beats the heck out of satellite that we suffered through before. Now I’m concerned that it may all be going away at some point. But reducing information availability to a single force-fed source may be the point.
Seems like a very fitting description of the current situation in US.
Today in 1792 Alexander Hamilton described what has happened in the last decade.
I don’t do Substack.
Doomscrolling these days is really depressing. Break over; gotta get back to milling. I really need those 2x6’s I’m making today. Maybe the world and the U.S. will be better when the next break rolls around — I doubt it.

So Trump’s big plan is to send in the National Guard to “crack down on violent crime” in D.C.? Funny, I don’t remember him deploying them when actual violent criminals were smashing windows and beating police officers on January 6…oh right, those were his supporters.

Donald Trump complaining about violent crime in DC is rich.
I swore off Substack quite some time ago for just these reasons. Now that a number of people that I like to read have migrated over to Ghost, looks like I need to make account over there so I can get back to reading these wonderful authors.
Asking the universities to prove a negative is a pretty tall order; but I guess they know that already.
Isn’t the policy in this country “innocent until proven guilty”? Guess that’s been turned on its head. And then eventually getting to the judicial system, if it’s not there already.
Yep. Cancelled our streaming subscription last week. Wish more would do the same. Don’t know if it matters but I sure feel better.
We just finished harvesting all our black-eyed peas. Quite satisfying spending the nights shelling! We won’t go hungry this winter.
