Hope Lange was BOTD in 1933 & died in 2003 at 70. The blonde beauty was known for roles in "Peyton Place" (1957) and "The Best of Everything" (1959), but my favourites are her TV movies like Walter Grauman's "Crowhaven Farm" (1970) & Lamont Johnson's "That Certain Summer" (1972)

Glamorous & gorgeous Gloria Grahame was BOTD in 1923 & died of cancer in 1981 at 57. She starred in many great Hollywood films, including Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), Fritz Lang's "The Big Heat" (1953), and Vincente Minnelli's "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952)

RIP Scottish fashion legend Pam Hogg, dead at 66. I had the pleasure of being on the jury with her in 2021 for Diane Pernet's A Shaded View of Fashion Film Festival, and she couldn't have been more charming and gracious

Underrated director Jonathan Kaplan was BOTD in 1947 & died in 2025 at 77. He came of age with another USA director named Jonathan who started out making B-movies, Jonathan Demme, who also died in his seventies, dying in 2017 at 73. Both started with AIP and producer Roger Corman

The great Udo Kier, whom I once interviewed on stage at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto as we both got drunk on Chardonnay & a bottle of Jagermeister as he mercilessly teased me, has died at the age of 81. I dug up the poster for the event & two photos me hanging with him in Toronto

The groundbreaking transgender Warhol superstar Candy Darling was BOTD in 1944 & died in 1974 at 29. "Women in Revolt" remains my fave Warhol/Morrissey film, in which a reporter played by Jonathan Kramer tells her, "You're not a blond on a bum trip! You're a bum on a blond trip!"

The wonderful Susan Anspach, so great in such movies as Bob Rafelson's "Five Easy Pieces" (1970), Herbert Ross' "Play It Again, Sam" (1972, as Woody Allen's ex-wife), and Dusan Makavejev's "Montenegro" (1981), was BOTD in 1942 and died in 2018 at the age of 75

Legendary Hollywood scriptwriter Robert Towne was BOTD in 1934 & died in 2024 at 89. He wrote & directed the hot lesbian fetish movie "Personal Best" (1982) & allegedly had affairs with both its co-stars, Mariel Hemingway & Patrice Donnelly, ending his marriage. That would do it!

The great Geraldine Page was BOTD in 1924 & died too soon in 1987 at 62. She was married to actor Rip Torn, 6 years her junior, for 27 yrs. My fave performances of hers are as Alma Winemiller in P. Glenville's "Summer and Smoke" (1961) & as Eve in Woody Allen's "Interiors" (1978)

Gay French author Andre Gide was BOTD in 1869 & died in 1951 at 81. Known for his fiction & autobiographical works, he expressed the conflict & eventual reconciliation of the 2 sides of his personality, a Protestant austerity & a transgressive sexual adventurousness, respectively
