#TheWhirlwind was an incredible #KDrama

I started it over a year ago but paced myself becuz of all the tension in the show & the political climate irl. But I always wanted to finish it becuz it was that good.

Now at the end, I'm honestly in awe of how amazing it truly was.

Then, he's got a super rare illness, that we're supposed to assume got cured because he returned?

And, they make this big deal about Sunwoo returning to television. Did all that filming and then...absolutely nothing. Like, nothing changed.

But suddenly, the focus was on his illness. That's why he disappeared from acting? I thought that was cuz the agency & his mom

It bothered me Je Yeon thought Sunwoo had a relationship with the hotel manager & he never corrected her.

The agency that went bankrupt. Why Sunwoo MIL hated him so much (because of his mom?). His dad just ends up w/ Nu Ri? What?

Stuff just got passed over. IDK. Maybe I missed the answers 🤷🏾‍♂️

I saw a fascinating comment on the Kdrama subreddit from someone who was the COO of a production house in the 2000s. They say a lot of dramas underperformed this year but then they list the ones they think did meet or exceed expectations. Not a lot of surprises but still interesting.

Part 1 of a comment on the kdrama subreddit that reads:

I think there are 2 takes on this question. That of the showrunners and sponsoring production parties, and that of the individual consumer.

As we all have our own individual preferences no drama is going to satisfy everyone. Some really hate on individual stars: we see it often on this sub particularly aimed at some of the women, and nothing they appear in will ever stop the nitpicking and derogatory remarks. Even if the show itself performs incredibly well across a broad spectrum of markets and consumers.

For 4 yrs in the 2000's I was the Chief Operating Officer of a production company that produced both film and tv content (United States). IF a show drew in the audience and resulted in good advertizing dollars

Part two of a comment on the kdrama subreddit that reads:

advertizing dollars for the network then it was a hit no matter individual personal tastes. An added dimension now is what helps maintain or sell subscriptions for NetFlix, Disney, Paramount, Apple, Prime, HBO, etc.

In that context looking over some recent offerings I think there have been many misses this year. To me it seems many of the shows underperformed.

I think the way to flip this to to look for the shows that performed or exceeded expectations:

When Life Gives You Tangerines

Bon Appetit Your Majesty

Our Unwritten Seoul (although internationally it perhaps underperformed outside Asian markets)

Squid Game

Buried Hearts

Part 3 of a comment on the Kdrama subreddit that reads:

Love Scout (My Perfect Secretary)

Cinderella Game (started in Dec 2024)

My Dearest Nemesis (huge Viki hit)

The Queen Who Crowns

The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call

Tempest (Disney)

Weak Hero Class 1

but it will also be network dependent. On the small independent cable broadcasters a show with 1%-3% viewership is quite possibly a big win, whereas on tvN if in a prime timeslot that is a poor performance.

I probably missed a show or two in the above list.

Maybe I should start a post on winners of 2025 but I was thinking this would be a good end of the year type post.

I find myself unsatisfied with it tho. I think I expected it to be more about him being a former child star, than an adult dealing w/ illness. Many unresolved issues in his past I wanted answers for too

But it was nice. The soundtrack was soothing. As a whole, it was OK 🤷🏾‍♂️

It's cute

It made me laugh (& feel uncomfortable) because it reminds me of me after my divorce

I'm glad to see these two leads become leads finally too. I've enjoyed their acting for awhile

#TyphoonFamily is making me want to learn about the IMF crisis. Even though I've seen a ton of shows that highlight it, none of them have made me curious about how hugely it affected SK.
