We’re deeply grateful to our dedicated Brooke Pakistan colleagues and stand with the families & animals they continue to protect.

Phase two of Brooke Pakistan’s emergency response has now moved into Punjab & Sindh.

In recent weeks, teams have:
🐴 Helped 8,500 equines
👨‍👩‍👧 Supported 4,000 families with rations & first aid
🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 Protected both animals & people by meeting their shared needs.
🇵🇰 Brooke Pakistan teams are still on the ground, supporting working horses, donkeys & mules, and the communities who rely on them, after devastating floods hit Pakistan.

Many villages remain underwater, and equines are vital in helping people reach safety. 🧵

🇵🇰 Pakistan:

As the trade shifts east following African bans, our teams are engaging the media and rolling out a new awareness strategy to combat the growing DST threat.

🌍 Central & East Africa:

In Cameroon, partners are tackling cross-border trade issues linked to Chad and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has drafted a National Animal Welfare Strategy highlighting the impact of the DST.
🇹🇬 West Africa:

Togo has introduced a national ban on the DST and plans to host a workshop to raise awareness, communicate this ban, and strengthen border surveillance.

In Ghana and Burkina Faso, advocacy and communication campaigns are pushing for stronger government action and public awareness.
🌍 In East Africa, @thebrookeea.bsky.social continues discussions with governments in Tanzania and Kenya, focusing on long-term sustainability and stronger protection measures for donkeys.
🚨 The Donkey Skin Trade poses a serious threat to donkey populations worldwide. At Brooke, we’re working with governments, regional bodies, and animal welfare partners to protect donkeys, and the communities who rely on them.

Here’s an update on how our country programmes are tackling the trade 👇🏼
The event supported emergency care skills and #mentoring, and highlighted Brooke’s commitment to advancing #animalhealth and welfare.
Brooke #veterinarians attended a workshop in Kenya to enhance their #clinicalskills for low-resource settings, with training from #BEVA volunteers. Vets from several regions focused on pain management, equine behaviour, and #animalwelfare... 🧵

It’s #WorldAnimalDay, a moment to celebrate the animals who support our communities.

Working horses, donkeys and mules are vital partners, yet too often unseen.

Brooke is working for a world where they have a life worth living. 🧡
Brooke vets are making the most of their Kenya trip - diving into day four with hands-on clinical training with BEVA Trust volunteers, mastering nervous system diseases, eye issues, surgical skills, and field exams. Special shoutout to Whiskey, our superstar patient of the day! 🐎

Working animals are key contributors to the #UnitedNations' #SustainableDevelopmentGoals, including #SDG1: No poverty, #SDG2: Zero hunger and #SDG13: Climate action.

But these animals are not reflected in the livestock policy around them, making them ‘invisible livestock’.
“We hope to see these animals included in more #livestockpolicy planning to prioritise their wellbeing, which in turns supports humans and the planet.”

We also gave a talk at the conference on the value of improving #animalhealthcare through Brooke’s flagship Animal Health Mentoring Framework.
Brooke’s Head of Animal Health and Welfare, Dr Laura Skippen, said: “The conference was a chance for us to shed light on #workinganimals as a lifeline to so many people - and a crucial part of #foodproduction globally.”
Livestock support the livelihoods of around 1.3 billion people globally and make up 40 percent of the world’s #agricultural GDP, but working horses, donkeys and mules are often forgotten in these conversations...
This week, Brooke visited the @fao.org in Rome to raise the visibility of working animals as vital livestock contributors globally... 🧵
Then, out in the field we conducted a transect walk of some donkeys’ home environment, putting ourselves in their shoes and using the frameworks from the morning to appraise their #welfare, making suggestions for how things can be improved for their well-being. 🩺 🫏 🫶🏽
In the classroom the team discussed different frameworks that we can use to appraise welfare - the 3 Fs (friends, forage and freedom), ICE (injury, comfort, emotion) and the #5Domainsmodel (Nutrition, Environment, Health, Behaviour and Mental State)...
