Woof. The John Candy documentary is a beautiful, poignant dive into one of my heroes. Thank you for that, Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds. So well done.

My inaction figure has arrived — and is about to fight all my other figures. You’re going down Darth Vader with a lightsaber in his arm and Mego dolls!

Love you Beauty & Brains with a Twist for bringing me to the amazing folks at 3D HQ San Diego. What a spectacular gift!

I’m sure I’ll regret it, but we need the space so I’m selling three pieces from my animation collection, all from the opening credits of the movie Grease. Each is signed by Animator John Wilson. You can see them and bid here:

Grease is still the word.

Thank you so much, teachers are truly everything — here’s to many more years indeed!

Ten years! Can’t believe it’s been a decade since this happened. And both Mrs. Sherman and Amy are thriving and still part of our family.

(I named Waggs in my thrillers after her). Love you both so much. If you’re looking to donate, go to kidney.org or floodsisterskidneyfdn.org.

NOTE: When we were working on our I am Jane Goodall kids book, she weighed in personally on the drawings to make sure that even in the pages of a cartoon biography, we were modeling good behavior so millions of kids would see how to properly take care of animals.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.
What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to
make.”
— Jane Goodall

By following her gut instead of following the rules, Jane Goodall didn’t just change how we
look at animal intelligence.

She changed how we look at the world.
bradmeltzer.com
No doubt, these animals were intelligent.

Over time, she learned that the animals had their own personalities and complex personal relationships.
bradmeltzer.com
As she watched, two of the chimps—one named David Greybeard, the other named
Goliath—began stripping leaves from twigs and sticking them down the mound of a
termite hole.

Goodall saw it. She realized that they weren’t just using tools.

They were making them.
bradmeltzer.com
She wasn’t supposed to. Animals were supposed to get numbers, not names.

Why?

So scientists wouldn’t project human attributes on the animals.

But in Goodall’s eyes, only by looking at the chimps as individuals could she truly
understand them.

It made all the difference.
bradmeltzer.com
In the summer of 1960, she arrived in what is now Tanzania. The chimpanzees that she was studying would run whenever she came into sight.

Using binoculars, she inched closer. The animals slowly got used to her. Soon, she started naming the chimps.
