Day 22: What is your "pie in the sky" dream project to edit? I have four clients that satisfy my previous dream projects. My current one is to work on a new sweeping TTRPG from start to finish & get to do fun add-ons like cookbooks, crafting, and other fun side hobbies associated with that IP.
Day 21: How do I recharge after a big project? I put in a few days as a buffer between projects to allow decompression. I also try to stack different kinds of projects so I am switching from one kind to another to prevent burnout.
Post-nap our nanny arriving and easily slipping into editor mode and business mode for 4-6 hours. Eating a bunch of pre-prepped snacks and tasty drinks (water and tea). Then having a good evening with my family. (2/2)
Another catch-up post for the Editors Tea Club October Challenge! Day 20: What does a nourishing editing day look for you? This has definitely changed in the last year. My day starts with having an excellent morning with my dog and child. (1/2)

Upon this foundation I keep feeding my love of story by continuing to read books by my adulthood's favorite authors: Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, and Susan Dennard to name a few.

Day 19: What book or story changed the way you edit? It is a combination of authors that has shaped the way I understand story: Brian Jacques' Redwall series, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, Nancy Drew mysteries, and all of Tamora Pierce's work.
That feedback has to be sorted to make sure it serves YOUR vision of the story, not diminish it.

Day 18: What story type or genre do I wish I could edit more of? I would love to receive more TTRPGs, cozy fantasy, a fantasy or sci-fi cookbook, or a epic fantasy manuscript.
Playing catch-up for the Editors Tea Club challenge!!

Day 17: What do I wish more people understood about editing? I wish aspiring writers knew that editing is a long process. One that starts with them unless they are enlisting the services of a book coach or joining a writer's critique group.
"Thank you Heather, you are always so miraculous."

"Beyond simply editing, you have a knock for author coaching where you invest in your writers and make them believe in themselves more than they ever could on their own."

"This book is better with your editorial input."
It makes the hard days & frustrating tech issues worth it.

But my favorite part is hearing the excitement in the creator's voice during a call or receiving a client email that I made their day. I have a folder where I store these compliments & hoard them for when imposter syndrome decides to call.
Day 16: What is your favorite part of the editing process? I love what I do, so I like a lot of the process I have created. The first dip into a new manuscript, the collaboration calls, that second pass where the story expands, and delivering a project that I am satisfied with.
Thanks to my mentee: Katherine Moore.
Extra thanks to my amazing mentor: Rosemi Mederos who was one of my first editor cheerleaders and my role model.

I am multi-passionate and technically this list shows off my favorite genres. I have worked in many different areas: technology, memoir, business, automotive, patents, and Christian fiction to name a few.
So, my favorite thing is when I connect with a client that has a fresh twist for me.
Day 14: What are your favorite genres to edit?

Earlier this month I reintroduced myself and talked about the genres that I specialize in.

• Sci-fi
• Fantasy (Dark, Urban, High, and Low)
• Romance & Romantasy
• Horror (Paranormal, Monster, and Gothic)
• TTRPGs
• Recipe Editing and Cookbooks
We are a week and a half away from the Northwest Editor's Guild Red Pencil Trivia night! Nerd out with your fellow editors before the Red Pencil conference in November. This is a separate event that you need to sign up for with a recording for those who can't attend live (like me)!

Day 13: My favorite teas are Harney & Sons Paris, Friday Afternoon Tea: Moon Magic, and Ronnefeldt: Assam Bari Irish Breakfast. All of them delicious hot or cold (highly important since they get forgotten when I an enthralled with my work).

Day 12: What is my editing superpower? Story retention and worldbuilding. My ability to read a narrative & ask the questions that fill gaps or spark new ideas for my authors/creators. I help create the structure for new stories as well as fixing their WIP.

I use a fully customized Plum Planner which has a whole bunch of extras for me and it has been a relief to see everything laid out in one spot. The digital planners still exist since they are shared with family but at least I have one spot for myself.

Day 11 of the Editor's Tea Club social media challenge!
How do I stay organized? I used to be a physical planner girl, then I went to digital...three digital calendars for family and work. So this year I went back to physical to combine all of the digital planning into one space.
I run it before I start editing and after as a cleanup, so I knock out a lot of little things so I can focus on the big stuff. Best part is, it is not connected to generative-AI so I know my client's IPs are safe. #Editor #Day10
Day 10: What tool or system saves my sanity? PerfectIt is my go-to consistency checker. I love that for longtime clients I can customize their word choices, and since I have a Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) subscription as well, it helps me validate CMOS rulings as well.
