The last two Fridays I have made it a mission to send a good note home for two students out of each class. It is a quick note saying I have noticed them doing good and appreciate it. That is basically it. Oh, and I am in middle school. Parents have been loving it.

Kids are taking an assessment today and doing well. It makes me smile to see them do so well.

Spent the day at a local park doing water quality lessons with my 8th graders! #teach180 #edusky
Definitely enjoyed Northern California.
Spent the last week out in the redwoods with the family for our fall break!

It really is a super program.
Tomorrow we get to finish up our Skype A Scientist opportunity with two awesome microbiologists, one of which is going to share some in Spanish. @skypeascientist.bsky.social #teach180 #edusky
Got to talk for a few minutes with a research scientist about bioethics with my kids. I know it was brief but it will be something I can most definitely refer back to. #teach180 #edusky
To any of my fellow science educators, you have to give @skypeascientist.bsky.social a try. They match your class up with a practicing scientist. It has been an awesome experience for my kids. Seriously, sign up for one. You won’t regret it.

Yesterday two classes got to chat with a Microbiologist about the gut Microbiome and it was a great experience. The other two get to chat with Microbiologists on Monday all thanks to @skypeascientist.bsky.social Awesome program. Thank you.

Today we were wrapping up a case study of a patient that was sick and got better. Main point was to see that space in the gut Microbiome was not good since it allows bacteria and easier path to grow and colonize. #teach180 #edusky
Worked on block four of our important science prefix/suffix list, worked some on our case study of patient 23 and figured out space in the gut is not a good thing. #teach180 #edusky
And the rest are close that we do one day of review, do the critical juncture and move on to the end of unit assessment. After that, they get to decide what we study with the remaining time that had been set aside for that unit. #teach180 #edusky
Put on an independent study program instead of the traditional work but must do any of the assessments to show they mastered it 3) enough students show they know it OR are having maybe a small misunderstanding so I find the issues and shorten the unit 4) enough students test on a he top level 2/
Today we took a pretest for an upcoming unit of study. Once I look at the data, I make one of four decisions: 1) scores were low enough and widespread enough to warrant completing the unit as originally intended 2) If a handful of kids show mastery on the pretest, they will be 1/
Today we worked on a prefix vocab list quiz, safety quiz and wrapping up some work from earlier in the week. #teach180 #edusky
Spent today talking lab safety and writing a short answer response after watching the NOVA Wonders episode of What’s Living inside you. #teach180 #edusky
Today we talked about what it takes to score a 5/5 on their short answer assessment questions, wrapped up our NOVA episode with a section about fecal transplants. #teach180 #edusky
Yesterday we did two small activities to help the kids get a better understanding of the Cross Cutting Concepts of the NGSS. #teach180 #edusky
Day six - spent time working in a lab writing up, learning ten new prefix and suffixes, listening to our guidance counselor. #teach180 #edusky
