Typo fixed. My thoughts on "Box Hill", the source material for "Pillion"
Thoughts on "Box Hill" A very different tone, gentler overall, I thought – and of course, told only from Colin’s perspective. The ending – no spoilers, again – is substantially different, and there are plenty of other changes too. The book and relationship both span many more years; but perhaps shortening the span makes things easier to film. Ray, most notably, is nowhere near as emotionally cold in the book. He’s still not perfect; he still hides much of his life from Colin, but he’s not as casually cruel. Some might argue that the film has taken too many liberties; but given the constraints of fitting within a 90 minute running time, I think it’s remained true to the book’s themes, of submission, growth, of bonding – if not exactly love – and of sudden, inexplicable loss.

Sometimes people say “I love the full BLUF look, but I’m a sub” I don’t think it has to matter. Look at the marine, in full dress uniform, outside the Oval Office. He’s taking orders, but he’s still smart. And if you want to look your best for a top, or Dom, then why not? Things – like caps, and ties, and uniforms – have meaning in a context. And we’re outlaws. We – and the people that matter to us – get to make our own context.

OK. Here's my thoughts on Pillion in three hopefully spoiler-free images. Full text in the Alt. May post it as a thread later.
Thoughts on Pillion First, let's get this out of the way: No, it's not perfect in its representation of BDSM. And that can be frustrating - just as it was to watch years of movies where The Gays always got AIDS. But we can't expect every movie about kink to be gold-standard RACK. And if it was, then this wouldn't be the film of the book it was based on. I think the two leads were excellent; was it the acting, or was it personal experience, but I certainly felt I understood at key points Colin's need for just a bit more than he was being given? And I'm definitely with Jake Shears on the kissing thing. Thoughts on Pillion, 2 At the start of the film, Colin doesn't really know what he's getting into; many of us have had that experience stepping into the BDSM world. But he finds he likes it; he discovers his “aptitiude for devotion.” But it also seems clear to me that he's longing for more; and when things come to a head - I'm trying to avoid spoilers - he doesn't get the support that he desperately wants, and I'm pretty sure that's why he acts out. Some might call it bratty, but I wept for Colin, and the miserable gruel of kindness that was only offered in extremis. Thoughts on Pillion, 3 Ray is a man so emotionally cold it hurts. Casual with Colin's feelings, dismissive of his parents; and while many of us might fantasise about the merciless dom with total control, with control comes responsibility. Ray's behaviour might be ok in a situation where Colin had other emotional support, but he's not really made that possible. Colin grows. He realises what he needs, and sets his red lines. Ray doesn't. The look on his face in the park is the look of a man who think he has made a massive mistake. Who realises that, in truth, he isn't quite the man he thought he was. And I think that terrifies him.
