So my new year's resolution is:
Read 100 books.
Given the state of my Kindle half of those could be just finishing unfinished ones.
bjornfr.bsky.social
Books read:
2018: 145
2019: 107
2020: 92
2021: 37
2022: 61
2023: 30
2024: 36.

All the yikes. And a new year's resolution decided. For a start just finishing up the half read books should get me to '23 in about a month....

Nah I mean they should have just kept their thighs closed the little....

Award-winning pain researcher here. This is not something that can be done. Hope this helps.

“In nursing homes, neonatal units, and ICU wards, researchers are racing to turn pain—medicine’s most subjective vital sign—into something a camera or sensor can score as reliably as blood pressure.”

It's what I'd heard and am happy to have confirmed. Enjoying it very much!

You do get your fair share though??
Feel a bit like a pickpocket.
But it'll make the last day in bed with this lurgy enjoyable.
And having brought back a bottle of Cynar from London Monday I can possibly drink appropriately at some point!

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

I have no doubt it helps. Every little does.
My stance on UBI simplified even further is that is a fabulous idea, needs livable wage, will be unbelievably difficult to finance and will be an absolute necessity in anywhere from 20 to 50 years from now.
But first: free (ish) healthcare
bjornfr.bsky.social
Anyway, I've just clicked on your bio and I'll certainly have a good look.
Especially any calculations involving livable wage UBI, taxation needed, and where savings are to made but cutting programs made unnecessary by UBI. If I'm persuaded I shall be pleasantly surprised.
bjornfr.bsky.social
I think I've seen NIT mentioned but I've certainly not thought about it at all
I stand by what I said. UBI does nothing to fix the health care problem in the US for example. Start there.
bjornfr.bsky.social
Not in a country as defined above.

A priority for a country not falling under the definition in 1 should be to be a country falling under the definition in 1

Any UBI which replaces all other government support must be on a livable wage scale.

The taxing needed for this is... Vig

If a UBI in a country as above is not a replacement but a much smaller amount than livable wage it is probably still not worth the extensive tax needed.

2/3
bjornfr.bsky.social
Here is my takes on UBI without the nuance of my actual stance
In a country with extensive mostly free healthcare, actual payments to people unable to work for health reasons and other financial support, UBI which is supposed to replace all such payments is damaging 1/3

Oh and if you want courage I read the Dune books at around the same time. In reverse order mostly iirc. Starting with chapterhouse.
