Wild Bill, or Doctor J, either way.

Retired scientist, loving father and grandfather, and grieving widower. The rest can wait for later. (Well, I think I can finally add "geyser gazer" without emotional collapse, even if my favorite gazing partner is gone.)

My technique for finding lost objects is much simpler: lose something else. preferably of lesser value but usually not.

Being descended partially from Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Potato Famine (maybe earlier, but that's most likely), I wish I could see this; thanks, Kate G, for posting.

I interrupt the political noise for a quick sports question. How many of my friends here remember Rudy Tomjanovich?

If you find the name familiar but can't remember why, see my reply. Either way, take a guess where I'm going with this.

I myself have turned lead into gold, starting with a light isotope of mercury and the Michigan State University cyclotron. It isn't that hard to do. It's just hard to make a more than a few atoms of it at a time that way!

Do the ludicrous Star Wars "holiday" if you must, but remember Kent State.

Thanks. I'll see if I can track down the Silver response. Anybody else got anything on this?

I'm curious what people think of this article, which appeared in the local e-paper. Working on finding one with the same content but in a more compatible format.

@grumpifrog.bsky.social You're usually on top of things like this, so: any idea whether the shutdown of fivethirtyeight is attracting journalistic attention? I'm seeing very little of it.

And this differs from delusional how?

There's room for both positions. Some of his behavior is clearly delusional (the transgender mice declaration, etc.) But I have maintained for years -- like, maybe thirty years -- that he is an evildoer. And as for his minions ... I simply don't know.

I am unfamiliar with the speaker or organization here, but I will agree from personal experience that something is broken in New Mexico medical care that is causing physicians to leave the state. Any more informed opinions on what he's talking about than mine?

"Synesthesia" may be another one that's evocative in unintended ways. It isn't a disease; it's just, well, strange and wondrous. (Says a guy who's somewhat synesthetic as regards pain => color.)

I responded to this on FB, but to get the ball rolling here, "peristalsis" sounds ominous and disease-like until you find out that it's an entirely normal activity of the GI system, and that we'd be worse off without it.

_Reverse_ peristalsis, on the other hand ...
