On the ferry from Swartz Bay to Tsawassen (coast Salish peoples). This kind of foggy-islands-receding-into-the-distance was a primary image of BC for a lot of people my age who lived far away, thanks to the work of artists Peter & Traudl Markgraf (https://artshudson.org/1412/artistmarkgraf1412.shtml).

Oops I forgot alt text: Four colour photos of sections of cobs of 'Glass Gem' corn on white backdrop, fully mature and dried. They are all sorts of combinations of yellow, red, blue and a sort of green, in many saturations and shades, each cob being quite different from the others.

In Coombs there is a business built with a sod roof. It's extremely touristy but also has a real function as a market. Anyway the goats grazing the roof are a primary attraction for tourists. And they know it.

A view across the lake, stiched vertical panorama. We're standing on a shore at the top of a flat that's used as a boat launch wheh the water is lower. Water goes from the bottom of the frame to the mountains in the distance. Nearby we can see gravel through the water, and some dead plant stems are standing up though it. A bit further away the reflection from the sky and mountains takes over. The light was this soft hazy blue, very beautiful.

Meares Island and the surrounding lands (sometimes referred to as "Clayoquot Sound") were at the centre of an ecological and First Nations rights protest / court battle that became a cause celebre around the world in the mid 1980s into the 1990s. There were innumerable protesters, court battles, and celebrity call-outs, and it got a lot of air time. It was pivotal to how the courts approach ecological and First Nations issues now, probably the first time in the last 200 years that the Crown and the Corporations were successfully challenged on a large scale.

The house that we live in - in Vancouver - was the childhood home of one of the judges involved. In many cases he sided with the Province and the logging corporations, but he was also a part of many judgements that asked courts to interpret treaties and contracts in favour of First Nations by understanding them in the terms that the FN would have understood them at the time, and honouring the idea of continuous habitation as overriding Crown possession of lands that were not in fact unoccupied. It seems milquetoast today, but at the time it was a radical departure from how the colonial legal system had functioned in the past.

Two stiched panos

The first is from the forest floor looking up into the canopy - this forest includes enormous ancient Douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii), some cedar trees (Thuja plicata), and big leaf maples (Acer macrophyllum), draped in Old Man's Beard lichens (Usnea sp). The understory includes Vine Maple (Acer circinatum) and Alder (Alnus) species. On the ground are Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus), Sword Fern (Polystichium munitum), and highlighted in the center of this image, Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus).

The second is a very long very tall vertical pano showing the awesome height of individual trees, with a tiny yellow dot at the base - a person, for scale. And these trees are considered young, others are a great deal taller and wider.

A stitched panorama. We're in the basin of a small river, at its lowest now at the end of the dry season. Looking across some rock that was originally smoothed over by the passage of glaciers, then shaped by water pouring over it. The lines are smooth and sinuous and there are small pools everywhere, reflecting the blue sky. On either side is forest, mostly conifers, Alder, and Big Leaf Maple. In the distance, a hill, and even further away, a mountain. It's fairly sunny with only a few clouds and some haze in the distance.

The informational plaque at this pullout calls the park "[our] ancestral garden", which is brilliant, as it undermines the colonial fiction that the land was un-cared-for - in fact it was stewarded in ways that colonial knowledge is only beginning to understand.

Looking at a shrub from the middle distance. The leaves are threadlike and silver-grey, and are almost completely concealed by the plentiful golden yellow flowers at the end of every branch. It has the most incredible scent, like honey and sharp herbs.
