Allem explained that while research-based digital interventions had demonstrated efficacy in controlled settings, commercially available apps showed unreliable variability in therapeutic approach, transparency, and evidence base. He emphasized the clinical risk posed by unvalidated tools, noting that “sometimes the advice given is inappropriate or could be harm promoting” when patients use these applications. Such guidance, he observed, could delay effective treatment, undermine motivation for behavior change, or even inadvertently encourage substance use. Many companies avoid oversight by the US Food and Drug Administration by marketing their products as general wellness tools rather than medical devices, thereby circumventing requirements for evidence,

In Milwaukee, a 29-year-old woman was charged with her mother’s murder after police responded to a call and found Carrie Zettel dead in her backyard last month.  The tragedy followed escalating encounters with police where Zettel’s daughter,  Lauren Spors, exhibited troubling behavior indicating she was experiencing a mental health crisis. On Nov. 21, Spors was found incompetent to stand trial after showing symptoms of schizoaffective disorder.  Now, some Wisconsin mental health advocates are asking why there weren’t crisis interventions before the situation escalated. On November 18, 2025, Massachusetts advocates gathered for hours at the State House as they have, year after year, to beat back yet another legislative proposal for involuntary outpatient commitment, or IOC. Involuntary outpatient commitment laws create a layer of specialized courts that use the so-called “Black Robe Effect,” which uses a judge’s authority to compel people with diagnoses of “severe mental illness” to accept mental health and/or substance use intervention
