More science funding—yes—but needs distributing more equitably. Current system has very poor success rates & rewards previous success not necess quality. Scientists spend huge proportion of time writing & reviewing grants. Need core funding+randomly allocate grants above quality threshold.

Funny that Justin doesn't mention the fact that we have marginal pricing system where in order to meet demand the contributor which is most expensive sets the overall price even if it continues a minority to meet demand!

TL;DR using branching process theory I calculated times to extinction of an epidemic, so if we'd stayed in 1st lockdown—in principle—we could have removed infections within a few months.

Calculating sentences by pen, paper & calculator just shows you consequences of Tory austerity. And sadly fact this Labour gov don't at the very least having a temporary software solution (I could write code to solve this in a matter of hrs) shows you effectively we still have austerity

I look forward to a time when we don't need to rely on people's charity to tackle something as basic as homelessness.

But apparently the gov spending to do something about this will spook the bond markets.

This panel is completely biased to right wing/centrist economic orthodoxy. The @greenparty.org.uk are offering an alternative viewpoint and polling the same as Labour and Tories, but there is no one to counter the economics of balance-the-books'ism.

This discussion shows the ridiculousness of having fiscal rules based on very flaky OBR projections!

Meanwhile people are still in poverty and investment in green technologies and insulating the UKs leaky homes is lacking!!

#bbclaurak

Why is the premise of Amol's questions to head of OBR that welfare spending is too large and that debt is bad.

We need the BBC to stop being a mouthpiece of orthodox economics and thereby the interests of the rich and powerful.

#r4today financial segment helping us be in hock to and being exploited by the bond markets!

The fact that they're ok with Reeves budget is not a good thing!

Instead we need govs to spend to tackle the many deep challenges in the UK and a BoE backing the gov instead of working against it.
Pretty sickening that the BBC are so pally with an investor in bond markets.

Bond markets want to make profit from gov borrowing and have no interest in the social welfare of the country.

Again the BBC show complete bias towards orthodoxy on economic matters!

For me the key thing about Farage's racist comments is that he could easily say that was who I was then, I've changed, I denounce them and apologise to those students.

But he didn't and that tells me everything you need to know.

Haldane really disingenuous about @zackpolanski.bsky.social using perjoratives "lala land economics" & "funny money solutions": borrowing is not QE & he didn't advocate printing money! Haldane lashing out to avoid substance of argument: govs can borrow to command resources in economy.

Great to see @zackpolanski.bsky.social actually talking economic sense and very clearly and forcefully stating that govs are not households!!

The goal of gov is not to get debt down—goal of gov is to spend to drive the economy, by giving money to people to spend in the economy to drive demand and to invest in the infrastructure: both encourage private investment.

As Keynes said "Anything we can actually do, we can afford"

Feels like rewriting of history here—it was always about protecting NHS from being overwhelmed with COVID.

Also as my paper shows, we did not need an endless lockdown to eliminate COVID & but potentially a matter of months if we stayed in lockdown in June 2020.

What's shamebolic is a discussion of our economic future without saying capitalism has caused climate change and will cause future economic damage.

This is like arranging the deck chairs on the titanic, when we should be moving to a war-like economy to defeat climate change.

If you look at composition of BBC board of 13 (before resignations) then only one who you could say is out-and-out on the left (Muriel Gray) with the rest likely centrist or further right. So not a surprise that in fact there a bias against anything left wing, socially or economically.

What made me angry about Tories is they had knack of promoting ethnic minorities with callous views to positions of authority, since they calculate that it is more difficult to call them racist or immoral. It seems with Mahmood Labour are taking a leaf out of their playbook.
