1/ This is indeed the ballgame, Joyce,. exactly as you make so clear. I've posted a few times about what imo is a threshold issue but that I haven't seen anyone else address: severability. IOW the question of whether under the *normal* analysis of the constitutionality of a *part* of a statute, ...
It would be all too easy to overlook this case with everything else that's going on, but it's too important to miss, so I wrote a rare midday post. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...
Actually, Trump's security strategy focuses on personal profit and undermining democracy.

Literally.

Cowardly Pete Hegseth Is This Week’s Proof of the GOP’s Moral Rot
Of course Pete Hegseth is a disaster. But everyone knew back in January that he would be. That’s where the real problem lies.

Agents in Key Largo, Florida ripped this woman wearing medical scrubs out of her car as she screamed she is a US citizen. Agents cuffed her and put her in one of their cars.

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

So Bondi and Kash make a big deal out of arresting the J6 pipe bomber then the guy confesses that he is a Trump supporter who thought the 2020 election was stolen and his lawyer is arguing that Trump’s broadly-worded J6 blanket pardon applies to him and he should go free. Poetry.

I understand, as well as anyone, why folks are cynical about #SCOTUS. But even from the conservative justices' perspective, the birthright citizenship case is easy. And the Justice Department knows it, too; as I wrote in September, its bevavior in these cases has just been going through the motions:
179. Whither the Birthright Citizenship Cases?
Notwithstanding the Court's June ruling, President Trump's birthright citizenship executive order remains blocked—a broader lesson on the risks of paying attention to only one part of the news cycle.

What we are watching - as U.S. citizens are dragged out of cars and illegal war is waged in the Caribbean - is the corruption of the most sacred power we give the President - the power of violence.

We are no longer a democracy if the regime can use violence without restraint.

I kept reading that yesterday, expecting comments that, well, yes, OF COURSE they were trying to be rescued - by ANYONE - in the middle of the ocean. This can't POSSIBLY be an exemption from being a war crime. You send a friggin' Navy boat or ship to get them.

But what if they're NOT Tren whatever?
4/ Even worse on these officials account, it seems if the third view is correct, that was a reason to kill the survivors.

You read that right, and I am not exaggerating.⤵️

A shipwrecked person beckoning others to come rescue them is a basis for killing them.
