Too Narrow to Be Wise: The Tunnel Vision Trap of Modern Expertise.

this article and the below post have nothing to do with each other except for the role of the demon/expert. the drawing illustrates the concepts and complexity really beautifully.

Amazed by chatGPT 🤯
It has just recommended me to read this paper:

Perra, N. & De Domenico, M. (2023). Multilayer Network Epidemiology. Nature Reviews Physics, 5, 736–753.

Facts:

* I'd love to have a paper with @netscience.bsky.social but I haven't
* There is no Multilayer Network Epidemiology

Per @tarahaelle.bsky.social - brilliant words

“Very little of what’s happened since Jan. 20 has surprised me — I expected nearly all of it — but Congress standing by as Trump literally tears down the White House without permission? That was not on my bingo card.

Why #ComplexitySci is fascinating?

#ComplexSystems are ubiquitous!🧬🦠🧫🔬🐠🦜🧠🌪️🧪
And provide an analytical framework to study the behavior of phys, bio, eco, human & artificial systems #AcademicSky

Oh, this 💯

In a world with AI, we should reduce paperwork and delegate to machines most of the tasks that could be automated within universities.

Indeed, we should invest on what's the added value of professors: the time they can spend with students, as humans (both sides).
The most important thing universities should do in a world with AI is to greatly increase the number of professors, so that classes can be smaller and more class time can be spent directly interacting with students as people.

"employ in-class essays, oral exams+ rigorous discussions — that are far more difficult to use AI tools to complete. a close reading of the text should constitute the bulk in any introductory humanities class."

Recent estimates suggest there could be ~10²¹ planets out there: that’s a billion trillion.
Or a 1 followed by 21 zeroes 🤯

And maybe ~10²⁰ of them (10%) could have conditions not too different from our 🌎

Let’s try to get a sense of what that means, since our brain isn't good at grasping this.

Even if life appeared on only one planet in a billion (note we have seen "just" 6,000 around), that would still be ~10¹² living worlds:
a trillion places where chemistry might have transitioned to biology.

With numbers like these, believing we’re the only ones feels… just statistically unwise.

There are 15,000+ stars identified with 99% confidence in this picture.

It is mind-blowing to think that they host an average of 15,000 exoplanets.
