Informative and disheartening column. You weave together the challenges for undocumented immigrants with bad behavior by huge corporations with bad behavior by relatively local construction companies as if they are the same problem but I think that confuses the respective issues.
Terrible data like this will contribute to poor strategy going forward. Trump has done worse stuff yet stayed more popular than his first term and despite those depths he would have been re-elected if not for Covid/Floyd.
I am in the industry, have 40 years studying the issue (including a grad degree) and have lived in the heart of cities (DC, Philly and Boston) for over 35 years. Just because you see every public discussion of struggle for this city as a slight to the Mayor doesn't mean you get to play pretend.
If you squint really hard you can see it but that's because your eyes are shut and its a dream. Buildings continuing to sell for pennies on the dollar in the financial district and visitor count through turnstiles isn't changing.
This is an example of low hanging fruit Liz Warren types have left for the GOP to cut for which voters do not at all care. Completely irrelevant compared to the authoritarian hold that has come over this country.
My point is that a local curmudgeony lowlife paper like the Herald is largely irrelevant if she were to use her outside voice. I have made these critiques to her in person as well.
Herald is an irrelevant rag but found an opening. You ever wonder why the Mayor says nary a word on so many issues which would headline local media & drive public thought? Mass & Cass? Nope. White Stadium? Nope. Mini-scandals like this? Schools? Zip. How Biden failed and Trump succeeds, regrettably.
