Durham in the 1970s...

This might be the greatest (and saddest) documentary I've seen. I think of Michael 'Mini' Cooper often.

Inside Story - Mini
The story of Michael - known as 'Mini' - who at 11 years old has twice attempted to burn down his house, and was designated too dangerous to be allowed his freedom. (1975)

You missed out on a grrrreat anecdote here, Bluesky.
Quiz time: I just bumped into a friend of mine in the Co-Op, who was once played on screen by Al Pacino.

But what film was it.....?

The two best non-fiction books I've read in 2025 have been woefully overlooked by prizes and accolades.

Both are inventive, unique, heartfelt.

Read them!

I'm pleased to report that this year reviewers have called me both "new" (on my 12th novel) and "young" (49 3⁄4 years).

Back before the USA tragically died, this and Twin Peaks (both launched in 1990) really made TV special for a generation.

The UK only had El Dorado.

‘It explored the spectrum of humanity’: the enduring pleasures of Northern Exposure
The quirky early 90s drama ran for 110 episodes, had fans in Joni Mitchell and Bon Iver, and showed one of TV’s first gay weddings. Now, having been forgotten for years, its warm-hearted charms are be...

It's baffling to me that a film THIS good can completely disappear for 40+ years.

As folk horrors go, it's right up there.

God bless the BFI and all that they do. Now available on DVD and streaming.
