this is a really good conversation about the local through a book that sounds very cool, between two good podcasters
For the evening crowd:
Academic, critic, and prolific podcaster @ckunzelman.bsky.social joins for a far-ranging discussion about how cli-fi, sci-fi, and personal & political connections to the environment intersect in Ned Beauman's @clarkeaward.bsky.social-winning VENOMOUS LUMPSUCKER. Bonus hog sighting.

i only know Isabella Star LaBlanc's work as the narrator for Stephen Graham Jones audiobooks (the second two novels of the Indian Lake Trilogy, The Baby Sitter Lives, & just today Killer on the Road) but today i remembered she is extremely capable of hitting the exact right notes to make me cry

As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

This month, we will be donating our profits from sales on Sundays to the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

This nation’s present leadership, which we already knew to be venal, are committed to yet more vile acts against our most vulnerable neighbors.

this is really, really good writing
I spent a half year overthinking this, and though it's hard to think about anything other than the East Bay's immanent invasion by ICE (may their crops fail and their penises fall off), I'll share it again, a big piece of "what Berkeley means to me": www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org/war-is-over-...

While this federal administration has been busy empowering ICE to become, essentially, an extrajudicial militia allowed to disappear people from our streets, the Bay has been organizing. We will not be beaten down.
What We Can Do About ICE
ICE is in the Bay Area. And yes, we can all do something about it.

This is of niche industry interest, but here goes:

The digital catalog platform most independent bookstores use to peruse and order new books for their stores (called Edelweiss) has jacked up their prices on publishers to catalog new titles 200-300%.

Why does this matter?
