Episode 34 of Kīlauea’s summit eruption featured twin lava fountains, one soaring 1300 ft, the other 330 ft, and the highest eruptive rate yet: 500 m³/sec. With 9 million m³ of lava in just 6 hours, it was twice as fast and half as long as previous episodes.

There's a whole lotta lava going on at Kilauea! I've lost count of the number of pool, overflow, and drainback events today! We're still in the precursory stage, the official start of Episode 34 is coming sooner or later, preferably sooner!

Although the volcano continues to recharge underground, the slower rate of recovery since the last lava fountains may lead to the longest pause yet between episodes, following the third-largest outpouring of lava during episode 32.

Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 20:09:30 HST

Episode 32 ended when the south and middle vents quit erupting at 8:01 p.m. HST on September 2. The eruption produced about 12.5 million cubic yards of lava, enough to fill a hole the size of a football field one mile deep!
