Now it’s all trimmed and neat they returned in droves, almost to the summer numbers. Is this normal behaviour?

Quick(ish) question
We’re lucky enough to have a large colony of Dunnocks or Hedge Sparrows in our large hedge throughout the summer. We fed them etc. Hedge was getting very overgrown but I waited until early autumn to cut it, and the signs were that they were diminishing in number.

Large old and gnarled tree trunk with lots of roots grounding it into a sloping hill. It might be an ash tree, but not sure. Seen in Devon, between the village of Beer and town of Seaton.

An afternoon of high drama in our garden. Our colony of sparrows and dunnocks that live in our hedge were most excitable at the appearance of a kestrel. Chirping away in distressed calls. I chased it away, despite it’s beauty, but we cherish our little tenants, so what else was I to do.
