Heading into the elections, Republicans held triplex control in Virginia since 2021. A triplex is when one political party holds the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state offices. In the gubernatorial election, Abigail Spanberger (D) defeated Winsome Earle-Sears (R).
4. Jay Jones (D) defeated incumbent Jason Miyares (R) in the general election for Virginia Attorney General. As of 8:42 p.m. EST, with 63% of precincts reporting, Jones received 51.3% to Miyares’ 48.8%. In 2021, Miyares defeated then-incumbent Mark Herring (D) 50.4%-49.6%
Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor presides over its state Senate.

Currently, Democrats have a 21-19 majority in the Virginia Senate. The last Democrat to be elected Lieutenant Governor was Justin Fairfax in 2017.
3. Ghazala Hashmi (D) defeated John Reid (R) in the general election for lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) ran for governor. As of 8:30 p.m. EST, with 57% of the vote in, Hashmi received 53.4% to Reid’s 46.3%.
As a result of the elections, the partisan makeup of the commission is three Republican members and two Democratic members. Johnson's term will last until 2030, while Hubbard's term will be up in 2026.
As of 8:22 p.m. EST, with 81% of the vote in, Johnson received 59.4% of the vote to Echols' 40.6%, and Hubbard received 59.6% to Johnson's 40.4% of the vote. These were the first elections held for the seat since court rulings in 2022 delayed the elections.
2. Alicia Johnson (D) defeated incumbent Tim Echols (R) in the election for District 2 of the Georgia Public Service Commission, and Peter Hubbard (D) defeated Fitz Johnson (R) in the election for District 3 of the Georgia Public Service Commission.
Governors of Virginia can only serve one consecutive term. Before Youngkin won in 2021, Democrats had won in Virginia’s 2017 and 2013 gubernatorial elections. Spanberger is the first woman to be elected Governor of Virginia.
