I'm completely oblivious to the context of what Im sure are many of the classics, but still haven't found this to be at all true, at least in my reading. People are people, we are hardly ever inscrutable to each other, across time or space or any other boundary or convention, unless we choose to be

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

I've been trying to put my finger on what feels so familiar about Vampyr as I'm playing through it, and I think I've figured it out - I read Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell this year, and the stories have an absolute heap in common

Like there's this sense of improbability that I sometimes get when I engage with a very ambitious piece of art. Like Elden Ring or Lord of the Rings leave me asking "how is it possible for this thing to exist?" I got that playing Heaven's Vault
