“Yesterday they called it coincidence
today it's synchronicity
tomorrow they'll call it skill.”

Among the great lessons of Lighter by Yung Pueblo is to ask ourselves more interesting questions. Many people pay coaches for this, and that has value, though if we get deeply honest, we can do this work internally and get unstuck.
Today we promote Hao Tran at Aiki Arts Center to black belt. He has been with us almost ten years also also publishes with Autonomous Press. See you there.

It's a beautiful gift of decades rolling along that making sound choices becomes more natural. I like helping groups go in generally the right direction while making space for creative surprises. The balance of structure and flow remains intriguing.
It was a really good week. We got ten sales at work (with another day still to go) and at the dojo, our sibling pair trained in their fifth class. We attempted forward rolls and a pin from a strike (progress).
The scientific method is a great way to solve things. We can choose to look at nutrition, fitness, relationships, and communication in a logical light and improve through experimentation and honest analysis.

Our youth aikido program meets twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 4:30pm - 5:30pm.

We are well staffed with two teaching teams of two Sensei each, dedicated aikido practitioners themselves. It's such an honor to introduce young people to their most capable, playful, and grounded selves.
I am so relieved to see the peace deal going through. So many families have had their lives on hold for two years. Now it's time to rebuild trust, in our daily relationships and hopefully around the world. Any time we interact with another human being, there is a chance to deepen connection.
Marilyn Steele and I had an adventure to see The Reservoir at Berkeley Rep yesterday. It was quite good: a Jewish queer kid tries to get sober and cure his grandparents of Alzheimer's (with mixed results). They also sing.

The Reservoir
See The Reservoir by Jake Brasch at Berkeley Rep, Sep 5–Oct 12, 2025. A heartfelt comedy about family and healing. Tickets at the official box office.

It was a pretty good week. We got sales at work and the youth aikido program is picking up steam. The Tuesday teaching team made its debut and did a fabulous job. And next week we will meet more new students as the program regenerates.
Indeed. I made the choice to use social media constructively years ago, and while it took work, now it comes naturally.
When we stop trying to impress other people and start being more compassionate, life sweetens and deepens. It's a paradigm shift well worth the effort.

"Is there something you’ve been struggling to solve that perhaps just needs to simmer? Can you trust that that is happening? How can you tell what is old versus what is current—not in the world, not in the headlines, but in you?"

I would be Tyger because she's so buff. And I would use that time to help her relax and play.
Grace. It's for you and everyone you meet. When we become a channel for grace, more options open up, along with more ease and creativity.
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

We have two more promotions on the calendar for next year at Aiki Arts Center. See you there.

It was a pretty good week. At Aiki Arts Center, we launched the youth program. And I'm reading Quiet by Susan Cain again. It still holds up after all these years, the lessons around turning inward and restoring regularly.

It's a real gift of martial arts practice that we get acquainted with our own strengths and challenges, and start to develop a map for our lives. When we have a useful framework and a supportive community, challenges start to feel more like meaningful opportunities for growth.

Our very own Encian Pastel is an amazing artist. He offers dojo mugs (with and without a handle) so you can enjoy the new logo and a beverage of your choice.

It's Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. That's a sacred time to reflect and make amends. Then we go forward (slowly) with more compassion. It's a gentle path that leads to trust.
I'm watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and am so grateful that in his segment on Israel, he makes it known that most Israelis do not support the extremist religious government. Most people around the world want peace.
