ACTUAL GOOD TRANSIT NEWS ALERT: Metro-North will run to Albany, starting this spring.

And Amtrak is adding back one train to NYP-ALB and capping prices at $99.
Flat fare and unreserved is so important. The flexibility is huge. I except this train to be busy from day one. I dream of the day Amtrak runs a flat fare NEC service. I can’t believe they actually did run one to Philly this century, a trip that is now incredibly expensive on short notice.
Wait it peaks at 1,000km? That’s crazy far.
I was just going off what I heard people do to save money. Not for commuting.
What prevents it from peaking at a shorter distance? Buses being cheaper and not *as* much slower as they would be at further distances?
The fact that everyone has to wait for buses there in the elements and without seats+lean bars is crazy. Unacceptable. Move ~half of the buses to a bus terminal in the parking lot north of the 7 station, use the space freed up on Main St to install similar facilities for the remaining buses.
What legally qualifies as commuter service? That’s seems very hard to legally define once you get so far north, even if the train happens to be Metro-North operated.
WHAT!!! I thought this was fake until I read more. A flat fare unreserved rail service is absolutely necessary.
First time riding a bike on a beach!! I love how easy it is bike to Caumsett State Park from Huntington Station!
This made me think about how they run a regional rail service, even while serving dense urban areas on the inner parts of their network. The average suburbanite (target demo until recently) is on the trains for 45 min or more.
NYC’s Metro North/LIRR underserve inner areas, but serve outer suburbs quite well for the distance traveled.

30 min frequency, split with a reverse branch!, dense area, 9 miles from CBD. In city, no subway nearby.

30 min frequency, sometimes better, no reverse branch, 66 miles from CBD.
It’s awesome. Until 7pm. By 7:10pm everything is gridlock. Eric Adams rolled it back from being 24/7 shortly after it opened. 🤞 Mamdani fixes it.
Tall bridge over Metro-North you say? Oh .. I *High* Bridge. :)
And ridership is still performing better at the Queens stations than pre-covid. Despite the wacky service pattern. Improve the service and it would be doing even better!!! Almost 3 years now I’ve been waiting for them to fix the mistake.

FH and KG would be as simple as stopping more express trains.
Yes, those branches need better service (and lower fares). Ridership would pop off. It annoys me to no end.

BUT the PW branch, FH, and KG all *had* 30 min service (still not good enough for the density). Instead of using GCM to increase service, it dealt death by reverse-branch.
If only the Port Washington branch could decide which terminal to serve with barely serviceable 30 min headways, instead of splitting with terrible hourly headways to each. Same goes for Forest Hills and Kew Gardens 😒

Sorry to be negative but crazy it’s been almost 3 years of this!!
Kayaking in Long Island City!! For free!!! So cool.
Finally ticked off Country Life Press station! I used Garden City and Hempstead stations too many times to have not used Country Life Press until now!
Oh I remember seeing that construction, I forgot about it. It’s a small step to filling in there area, hopefully more to come. There is a good amount of apartment buildings and duplexes near the station but there is plenty of commercial lots that could be more density like this!
Valley Stream? I go there for family all the time. This is news to me. (Could’ve missed it as I’ve used nearby stations recently due to VS elevator being out of service)
Killing ROWs pains me to my soul.

Long Island could have a top tier greenway from Queens to Suffolk County with Vanderbilt Motor Pkwy ROW, as was done in Queens.

LIRR could have direct service to Flushing/Mets from Floral Park if the old central RR was kept.

Such lack of foresight.
Free time + money is somewhat easy if you are DINK. Everything else accurate.
Always great to visit Ardsley-on-Hudson!!
I am upset that all the ones in Manhattan, particularly Hudson Yards, were rejected. Hudson Yards is a wealthy neighborhood, so the people most harmed by casinos would have to travel to go to it. Makes it harder to get sucked in. And way more likely get tax dollars from NJers going to it.
It is as quiet and empty as if it were the middle of the night, but two months ago the sun would still be up right now!
