Emmett Till was my father’s age. My father. Who was born and raised in Mississippi. Who treasured a mounted poster I had made from a snapshot of a street sign near his childhood home in the far backwoods. A home he longed to visit again but was fearful to do so. I cannot say he was wrong.
Emmett Till would be 84 today.

I went to Jewel to pick up a copy of the Reader. (Evanston and Chicago have done away with honor boxes for some unknown reason.) The place was a zoo. I snatched my paper and ran home, not to emerge again. Not even for fireworks. Actually not especially for fireworks.

The Onion got this letter from one of our subscribers in Alaska. She works with dementia patients and decided to leave a copy in the car for each one.
