Yesterday’s walk out to Whiteford Point coincided nicely with a very low tide, allowing access to the lighthouse. Built in 1865 it’s the only wave-swept cast-iron lighthouse of this size in Britain. #landscape #photography #history #landscapePhotography #stormHour #photoHour

A further selection of images from last nights superb Pallid Harrier show down on Llanrhidian Marsh. It roamed much more widely than I’ve seen previously, including a trip right along the marsh towards Crofty and back. #birdingWales #rareBirdsUK #UKWildlife #birdsoftheworld @birdsinwales.bsky.social

Further underlining what a great year it’s been for butterflies (at least compared to the last few) was this now somewhat worn Painted Lady at Whiteford Point yesterday. Several Red Admirals on the wing too. #insects #nature #wildlife #UKWildlife #photography #bugsky #UKButterflies #butterflies

At Whiteford Point the sun came out along with thousands upon thousands of birds. Oycs by the tonne, c30 Brent Geese, single Eider, 4 Great Crested Grebe, Sanderling, Curlew, Redshank, Ringed Plover, Little Egret etc. If I could have bottled the atmosphere I’d make a fortune. #birdingWales

Started the day at a misty Cwm Ivy. Highlight was a flock of 5 Crossbill over, chipping as they went. A pair of Green Woodpecker were chasing each other around the skeletal trees whilst Goldcrest and Coal Tit abounded. Handful of Chiffchaff but couldn’t turn them into anything rarer. #birdingWales

Pallid Harrier showed superbly this evening over Llanrhidian Marsh in the soft light. Best views yet. At dusk a male Hen Harrier and (I think) a ringtail joined the party, the former briefly tussling with the Pallid. Glossy Ibis in again behind sewage works. #birdingWales #rareBirdsUK #UKWildlife

Watched the sun set from Dowrog in the hope of a Hen Harrier or two. No luck on that score but great views of a male Sparrowhawk zipping through at ground level. Two Buzzards and a Kestrel also. #birdingWales

My record of connecting with Shrikes in Pembrokeshire is appalling so it was a great relief to find the Brown Shrike still present near St David’s this afternoon. Across and down the road from where originally found it gave some lovely views. #birdingWales #rareBirdsUK @birdsinwales.bsky.social

Very much in the last throes of my post-work birding walks for the year now with long shadows right from the off. Quiet out there but still recorded Common Sandpiper, Kestrel, Green Woodpecker and an unusually (for here) large number of Rooks. No hirundines. #birdingWales #patchBirding

Another image from the very showy Goldcrest down at Wiseman’s Bridge over the weekend. A touch of noise reduction and sharpening required but otherwise straight from the camera. #birdingWales #birds #UKWildlife #photography #birdPhotography #birdsoftheworld #wildlifePhotography

Big seas often mean the Grey Seals are forced from their usual haunt out on Worms Head, instead finding refuge in the more sheltered bays around Gower. Storm Amy was no exception with three bottling in Fall Bay. #mammals #photography #nature #wildlife #wildlifePhotography #UKWildlife

There were several Hornets flying around the thin strip of woodland south of Wiseman’s Bridge at the weekend. One very kindly posed allowing me to get my first photos of a species which I’ve only ever seen a handful of times. #insects #nature #wildlife #UKWildlife #photography #bugsky

Thanks VIC. He certainly wasn’t in a hurry to move along.

Nice set Frank. If only it would come that little bit closer.

Just before darkness took complete control a Barn Owl emerged over Llanrhidian Marsh and proceeded to hunt. Later it appeared in front of the car as I drove off, flying above and ahead of me for several seconds before veering away. Absolute magic. #birdingWales

The Pallid Harrier showed on and off this eve between 17:00 and 18:30 when it went down to roost. Nice to see plumage details in the flat light, though photos are awful. 2 Glossy Ibis dropped in behind the sewage works an hour apart. #birdingWales #rareBirdsUK #UKWildlife @birdsinwales.bsky.social

Very pleasantly surprised to first hear and then see this Dipper in full song along the stream through Stepaside yesterday. I hadn’t realised that they sang at this time of year, a welcome chorus during these quieter months. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birdsoftheworld @birdsinwales.bsky.social
