Yes, that was the actual inception of it. But the tactic was used all the way into the early 90s because Repubs still had a hard time winning elections in the south. Eventually it paid off though...and here we are. 😒

Yes, I think they did. I believe it was part of the "southern strategy" (Lee Atwater). They openly expressed great disdain for civil rights and social programs. Also stoked racial hatred. Sound familiar???
