We love sharing our passion for astronomy. We've been holding meetings in Edinburgh since 1924. Come to one of our meetings, in person or online - visitors are always welcome. #astronomyedinburgh #edinburgh #scotland www.astronomyedinburgh.org

Sh2-173, or the Phantom of the Opera Nebula, imaged with @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social remote 12" Murrell Newtonian 🔭 at #Trevinca in Spain. RGB stars with Ha for the nebula. #astrophotography

Me and my good pal Andrew from @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social gatecrashed a local #supermoon gathering last night with his Dobsonian🔭. Minds were blown as we looked at the lunar mare and craters through patchy holes in the cloud cover. Pop-up sidewalk astronomy at its best - loved it!

A rather misleading headline in the BBC this morning: the UK Space Agency is definitely not being scrapped!

#UKSA will change from being an exec agency of, to a unit within, the Dept of Science, Innovation & Tech, reducing UKGov red tape. Thoughts?🧪🔭🛰️

UK independent space agency scrapped to cut costs
Britain's space agency is set to be scrapped - a scientist fears the UK space sector could fall behind as a result

It wasn't (we don't use one) but I agree it does look like that.
We managed to capture the close approach of Venus and Jupiter yesterday morning when they were just 51' apart, using our wide-field telescope in Spain. You can just make out 3 of the Jovian satellites.🔭
Timelapse of a night with the Perseids. 169 captured with this NW facing camera on the edge of Edinburgh last night.

We also monitor quite a few comets, including the latest interstellar visitor, I3/ATLAS. Becoming easier to capture at around mag 17 🔭
One of the things we like to do is monitor variable stars. While everyone is waiting for T CrB to go "pop" we watch SU UMa, another dwarf nova that behaves similarly - just far more often and fainter. We caught the latest super-outburst. Our data in blue. 🔭
Supernovae are amazing! One star outshining all the others in a galaxy - sometimes even the whole galaxy. 🔭
We imaged NGC 7331 in 2024 with our @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social remote 12" Murrell Newtonian 🔭 at #Trevinca in Spain. Last night we took some further images to catch current SN Ia 2025rbx, clearly visible at 2 o'clock from the galaxy centre in the right hand image. #astrophotography
Just below the Plough / Big Dipper which you can see.
One of our meteor cameras on the edge of Edinburgh caught the bright fireball reported by many and in the News last night. So bright it saturated the sensor in the next frame. ☄️🔭
If in Edinburgh and look to the NE you can see a really nice display of Noctilucent Clouds. Mesospheric clouds of ice crystals, possibly formed on cosmic dust, so high up at 80km that they are still in sunlight even though normal, lower clouds have now gone grey. 🔭
Beautiful and ethereal!
Not to be missed if you're anywhere near #Edinburgh 🔭
We'll be there.

We are T–10 days from NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory's First Look! 🚨

This reveal of Rubin's first images is just a preview of what's to come as Rubin prepares to #CaptureTheCosmos for the next ten years! 🔭🧪

Here are 6 things you need to know before the big day🎬

Such a good project to get schools involved with. Now back for its 6th year. A project we support and definitely approve of. 🔭
We are back with our HOYS-LCO program for next Winter (2025/26). If you want to get your pupils involved apply now on the website: hoys.space/lco-project/

The power of combining data with your friends. Makes the Seestar S50 a much more capable device. 🔭
Another collaborative #Seestar S50 🔭 imaging exercise from @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social members me, Pat Devine, Ramsay McIver, Larry Cable. 7.95 hours from 4 Seestars on M27, the Dumbbell Nebula in Vulpecula. #astrophotography
A fun listen. Not to be missed 🔭

We actually have its predecessor the P75 Trident but very similar. GTR has more features but same capacity.
