Absolutely fascinating talk to @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social on Kuiper Belts around other stars by Tim Pearce of Warwick University, and how you can use images of them to infer existence of exoplanets. Available to watch on YouTube: youtu.be/z0JPizgxe2k #astronomy

How have I only just discovered google maps for space? If you, like me, did not know about this little piece of internet treasure, you must check it out! You can fly over moons and planets - and it's all real data 🤗 🔭🧪

My first go at processing a SeeStar mosaic using Siril and the DSA script. Needed more data than the 84mins used.

The Geminids are already firing and the peak should be tonight (14 Dec), clouds permitting. The Moon is kindly hiding too. These are a few from Friday night. Capturing 200+ in each of our cameras overnight (we have 17 in the Society). 🔭

A fascinating, clear and understandable talk by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell explaining how technological developments (for example CMOS cameras, leading to much shorter exposure times) have led to the realisation that many more objects in the universe than we realised are variable.

Talk by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell at 7.30pm tonight. It will be streamed live on YouTube. #astronomy

A big shout out to the P7 class of Stockbridge Primary who took these utterly awesome photos last night on their residential visit to the Lagganlia outdoor learning centre in the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Highlands. Lagganlia is part of the Scottish Youth Telescope Network and I'm so proud of these kids! 🥳 🔭 #SYTN

2025’s Geminids will be the best meteor shower of the year
With a waning Moon and a denser-than-ever debris trail, 2025’s Geminids might be the year’s best meteor shower, and 2026’s could be amazing.

Note, you don't need to be Scottish to celebrate! How about a nice bowl of porridge for breakfast or a wee dram of whiskey at the end of your day? 🥃

A time-lapse of a typical night observing with our remote telescope in Spain: ASERO. On an average night we observe 6 variable stars, a couple of comets and a chosen deep sky object - all selected by our members. 🔭☄️
Sometimes we do live observing, always fun!

A rather misleading headline in the BBC this morning: the UK Space Agency is definitely not being scrapped!

#UKSA will change from being an exec agency of, to a unit within, the Dept of Science, Innovation & Tech, reducing UKGov red tape. Thoughts?🧪🔭🛰️

One of the things we like to do is monitor variable stars. While everyone is waiting for T CrB to go "pop" we watch SU UMa, another dwarf nova that behaves similarly - just far more often and fainter. We caught the latest super-outburst. Our data in blue. 🔭

Supernovae are amazing! One star outshining all the others in a galaxy - sometimes even the whole galaxy. 🔭
We imaged NGC 7331 in 2024 with our @astronomyedinburgh.bsky.social remote 12" Murrell Newtonian 🔭 at #Trevinca in Spain. Last night we took some further images to catch current SN Ia 2025rbx, clearly visible at 2 o'clock from the galaxy centre in the right hand image. #astrophotography

One of our meteor cameras on the edge of Edinburgh caught the bright fireball reported by many and in the News last night. So bright it saturated the sensor in the next frame. ☄️🔭

If in Edinburgh and look to the NE you can see a really nice display of Noctilucent Clouds. Mesospheric clouds of ice crystals, possibly formed on cosmic dust, so high up at 80km that they are still in sunlight even though normal, lower clouds have now gone grey. 🔭
Beautiful and ethereal!
