My worldbuilding is focused on what will affect gameplay and roleplaying, like what weird weaknesses my werecreatures have, or what separates Cthonian and Qlippothic demons.

Their "legacy" does not undo the progress that has been made, and treating the past as a millstone about their neck is unfair to everyone. Especially modern writers that might want to tell a more interesting story than, "Tintin and The Social Media Struggle Session."

That's because there is nothing at all wrong with them. A number of my all time favorites were made by French and Italian creators.
Hell, look up Klaw by Antoine Ozanam and Joel Jurion. Kicks the shit out of American cape comics on every level.

Modern comics are abject garbage, but it isn't their fault. They are retelling the stories of characters that are, at this point, almost a century old.
Manga wipes the floor with comics because they at least have new characters and new worlds to explore.
