How much would they have to be paying to rent a similar property in a similar area?
Surely it would be better for them to be using their income yo buy that property for themselves, rather than their landlord?

I do not disagree.
Buying a place nearly forty years ago worked out for me, whether I would be able to do so today at that age is doubtable.

I will be sixty in a month's time.
I stopped paying for a mortgage when I was 53.
My father is currently 93, his brother was 95 when he died.
Going by that I can expect another thirty years of life, without having to pay for accommodation.
The money saved has bought me solar panels, ...

There is a better way to house people, & that is by subsidising public housing subsidised by the state

I was ill for a while, & for three years, my building society accepted only payments of interest on the interest that I was due.
It meant that when I got back on my feet, I was only in the same posit6as I was before I became ill.
Not many private landlords would have offered me the same grace.

If I'd rented at the time I bought instead, I would have paid a lot more over that timescale than I did with buying
I also haven't needed to make any more payments to anyone just for having a roof over my head, & have the freedom to make any changes of any kind whenever I want, including having pets
