Buying a place nearly forty years ago worked out for me, whether I would be able to do so today at that age is doubtable.

I stopped paying for a mortgage when I was 53.
My father is currently 93, his brother was 95 when he died.
Going by that I can expect another thirty years of life, without having to pay for accommodation.

I was ill for a while, & for three years, my building society accepted only payments of interest on the interest that I was due.
It meant that when I got back on my feet, I was only in the same posit6as I was before I became ill.
Not many private landlords would have offered me the same grace.
