…and honestly, this was exactly what was happening after 9-11. My best friend told us to start calling her ‘Maria’ instead of her Arabic name…it was an honest concern for Arab-Americans. I don’t get the outrage over the comment.

Both Joan of Arc and St. Louis were sculpted by Karl Bitter and were selected due to George Vanderbilt's request for two armored figures, and the choice of Joan of Arc may have been influenced by the staircase's architectural inspiration from Blois, France.

The "St. Louis" statue at Biltmore is a large exterior sculpture of Saint Louis IX of France, created by Austrian-born sculptor Karl Bitter. The choice of Saint Louis, the patron saint of architects and builders, was made by the Biltmore's architect, Richard Morris Hunt.
