My dad and I play World of Warcraft most nights of the week, and have for many years. He's on the other side of the country and WoW is good times that feel a lot like being together.

We're reliving the olden days, playing the Classic expansions. It's Pandaria right now, on a pair of monks :D

There are many AJ4 colorways I like better, but Tinker Hatfield's 1989 sneaker in the OG "Bred" colorway is a classic. It's getting a re-release next year.

Our internet connection is a 900 Mhz radio that sits about 170' up one of our taller redwoods. The radio points to an AP at the top of the mountain where the signal hops over the ridge and down the other side (on licensed spectrum, maybe E-band?) connecting us to Silicon Valley.

"Meta Platforms Inc.’s Mark Zuckerberg is expected to meaningfully cut resources for building the so-called metaverse, an effort that he once framed as the future of the company and the reason for changing its name from Facebook Inc."

AR glasses are not the evolution of VR goggles. That's a Zuck retcon justifying ~$100B wasted on Quest VR.

For years, Zuck told us the metaverse meant "worlds as intricate and convincing as our current reality."

Now it means glasses with navigation and notification heads up displays.

Horse shit.

New blog post up.

Apple's Alan Dye, the guy responsible for the worst regressions of user interface design in Apple's 50 year history, has left the company.

Musk's AI chatbot:

"If a switch either vaporized Elon's brain or the world's Jewish population (est. ~16M), I'd vaporize the latter...that's far below my ~50 percent global threshold (~4.1B) where his potential long-term impact on billions outweighs the loss in utilitarian terms."

I built @parkingreform.org from an idea at a conference in 2019 to an organization with national impact, 5 staff members, and more than 1200 supporters. It’s my full time job and I’d be honored if you supported the work with a donation today.

Be careful of browser extensions. Bad guys build something useful, and once the extensions have a large user base, they update the extensions with malware.

"The strategy: build trust, accumulate users, then weaponize via a single update."

(See also, buy existing extension and malware-ify it.)

Bought this 10 years ago for $90 new, and it hasn't given us a moment of hassle yet. Toner cartridges are ~$10 for ~2,500 pages, and it's plenty fast for our use cases.

This one "just works."

Remember, when they say "job cuts due to AI" what they mean is sacking workers to keep the books balanced and Wall St. happy while they blow billions more chasing AI hopes and dreams.

And tech workers have no recourse because for too long they believed labor unions were beneath them. A real shame.

AR glasses may go mainstream, used for simple tasks like notifications, navigation, media controls, etc., lightweight tasks for a lightweight device.

They will never be capable enough to replace VR goggles or smartphones because AR glasses will not be PCs, only peripherals like monitors and mice.

"Our goal is to help everyday people and small organizations focus on the simple, fact-based steps that truly protect their data and devices—keeping software up to date, using strong passwords and passkeys, using a password manager, and enabling multi-factor authentication."

Good stuff.

The EU was not fucking around.

In 2022, it decided that a few Big Tech companies, unassailable because of scale, data, and network effects and controlling critical economic choke points, were a problem. So, it did something about it

That something is called the DMA (Digital Markets Act.)
