“Freedom is the preservation of that original personal isolation. It stems from fetal self-entanglement, so similar to the movement made by fern buds in their tiny croziers before they unfold.”

“once a picture is finished the picture says whatever it can say, no more no less, the picture says in its silent way whatever can be said, and if it's not finished yet then how it's going to turn out and what it's going to say isn't something that can be said in words”

“Maybe the spark from one's eyes can light those of the other, though our own soul is always in chaos. We can only recognize ourselves in each others eyes. In the deadly, sleeping, empty city prowls a wolf. In the blue sky hangs a lonely golden hook.”

“To praise a work of literature by calling it sincere is now at best a way of saying that although it need be given no aesthetic or intellectual admiration, it was at least conceived in innocence of heart.”

“But didn’t people always talk as though they could actually hear things in their heads—not only know and recall what they knew about voices, music, sounds, but actually re-experience properties of pitch and timbre?”
