Finally the first & maybe the last tours of the closed since 2012 #artdeco General Hospital Building. Art Deco AF former Walgreens just quietly going hard as hell on a random corner in Detroit.

Color photo of a two story building taken from the former corner entrance at a wide angle. It has been partially filled in with nonmatching unsympathetic brick at the bottom, and has large windows with drawings of toilets and guys doing HVAC work, advertising the business currently housed here.

Color close-up of the second floor above the former corner entrance, and a small portion of one of the side elevations. On the corner, a concrete sunburst sits above the the parapet, with faces staring out from atop piers that are themselves ornamented by a red brick pattern giving this two story building a sense of verticality. Underneath the sunburst is ANOTHER sunburst, this one a more stylized Art Deco-y version. Centered underneath this is a panel with a golden shield bracketed by an arrangement of dark and light brick creating a diamond pattern highlighting the shield. On either side of this panel are alternating courses of stretchers with sawtooth brick, giving this tiny little section an amazing amount of visual interest and texture.

A shield set into a diamond brick pattern made from alternating dark and tan bricks! Sawtooth brick! Tan brick laid stretcher to stretcher! Red brick where they've used damn near every side of the brick (stretcher, header, soldier) to create a vertical pattern that serves as a visual arrow! Recessed brick arranged vertically! Faces!

Color close-up of another set of windows on the side elevation. Again we have faces atop piers with an arrangement of red bricks that serve to emphasize the building's verticality, but between them are a different shield centered in a bed of brick laid in a checkerboard pattern underneath a stylized Art Deco sunburst of cast stone.

A 1993 photo of Sunshine who lived in my Chicago apartment building. She was simply checking her makeup in the mirror, and I noticed the great sunlight coming through from the side. As someone who obsesses about dynamic natural light, I immediately noticed it and acted!
