This will be my 2025 media thread from now on.

I really enjoyed doing this last year, and I want to keep it up for 2025.
It looks amazing, treats its subject matter with dignity, and Benedict Cumberbatch is a really solid narrator. Entertaining and educational.

My ears were celebrating during the course of this movie.
Could be a case of Stockholm syndrome, but this was soooooooooooo much better, lmfao.

I feel like I can recommend it over the dire original version.
This was actually screened in theaters the year after the original and that would have been a pretty cool experience
Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D

This is the cut done by BBC Earth for the 2013 movie and was one of two alternate versions. There's also the Cretaceous Cut, which is a no-talking dino version of the film, but this is edited to work as a WW special if anything.
Limbo

This was so dope. Very simple, but elegantly designed with unforgettable visuals and challenging puzzles. Short and sweet.
I must give major praise to John Goodman's narration. I don't think that there could have been anybody else who could have nailed the tone like he did. A very dignified but also charming performance.
When Dinosaurs Roamed America (Re-watch)

Arguably one of the more classically progressive dinosaur documentaries for the time it came out, this has aged rather well for the most part. The CG looks like it was from a movie from 2001, but it still is one of the more polished efforts out there.
Dead Space: Downfall

As a massive fan of the games, this is surprisingly my first proper viewing of the film. It's not really a great film, but I still was interested to see how it ties into the events of the original game and the film itself is totally watchable.
Little Nightmares

This was a real nice treat for myself. Really distinctive designs and an immersive atmosphere made for an enjoyable experience. Its approach to worldbuilding is also totally my jam.
Not a spoiler for the film itself per se, but after the credits there is a BTS featurette with the director explaining the process of having his dog as the lead actor, and it made me smile so much.
Good Boy

This was a good time. The film's goal is to handle a traditional horror story from the perspective of a dog, and it nails it. As a dog owner myself, you can imagine my heart got split in two watching this.

Definitely giving my dog all of the hugs.
Walking with Dinosaurs: The Movie

Fox fucked it up.

It looks amazing visually, and there was a lot of care put into the project, but the terrible voiceovers and juvenile comedy completely ruin the whole film.

THEY NEVER STOP TALKING! LIKE, PLEASE JUST SHUT UP FOR FIVE SECONDS!
And the first trailer looks great? Oh boy, sign me up. I can't imagine how Fox can fuck up this fantastic opportunity that they have on their hands.
What's that? They're making a movie that's supposed to be released in cinemas? And the dinosaurs are animated by Animal Logic, who have worked on some of the biggest studio movies out there, and are being distributed by 20th Century Fox?
Said it before, and I will say it again: It actually speaks a lot of how huge Walking with Dinosaurs was that it spawned such a large and consistently high-quality franchise that went on for 6 years straight. Was sad to see it end with Monsters, but hey, nothing lasts forever?
It still is more than leaps and bounds better than most paleo-docs. WWM is a fun watch and gets major points for covering such a strange and peculiar time period in natural history. The creatures look great, and Bartlett's score is always great.
Walking with Monsters (Re-watch)

I do think the reduced episode count is to the detriment of the show, as it had less time to settle in a particular setting like its predecessors, and some of its narrative choices were very dubious (even for the time).
I think it's so engaging that for all of the brutality that comes with the main events, these young men are so encouraging and supportive of each other. It's a genuinely positive example of masculinity in action. Props to these actors for selling their character dynamics so effortlessly.
The Long Walk

Man, I felt my ankles tighten up as the movie was going lol.

Such a gut-wrenching ride. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson are going to have long and prosperous careers.
‎V/H/S/HALLOWEEN

I really need to give props to V/H/S for having so many entries and yet having such consistent quality control. Kidprint is definitively my pick as the best short. I admired its depravity, especially coming off the more lighthearted Fun Size.
It should be shocking to no one that the visual effects are unbelievable. These are some of the few movies that really earn that 3D experience, imo.
Avatar: The Way of Water

I think the first movie arguably has a tighter narrative, but this one definitely snuck up on me in regard to emotional depth and character drama. The final hour is James Cameron operating at his maximum.
Perfect Blue

This was really excellent, but also what the fuck?

Man, what type of movies would Satoshi Kon still be making if he were still around, though?

It really does such a great job of blurring the line between what is reality and fiction, as is typical of Kon.
Nigel Marvin was born for this kind of show.
Sea Monsters (Re-watch)

Sea Monsters is one of the big highlights of the WW franchise for me. It manages to be an educational, exciting and at times terrifying thrill ride while never going into awesomebro territory. Stunning visuals and arguably my favorite score from Ben Bartlett.
My favorite part of watching the UK version is seeing the presenter, Robert Winston, get progressively more unhinged.
