🤣🤣🤣

A old archaeology friend I've not talked to in 5 years called. Said he went to the local museum, where the curator asked him if he knew me because his last name was the same as a site I've written about. She said I talked so fast explaining things that she had a hard time keeping up.

The less available O2, the darker the ferric oxide in the ceramic. In the future, by adding/subtracting the sand volume in the stainless steel pot, I should be able darken or lighten the pots on demand. 5/ #ceramics

Since we can't create a reduced environment in the kiln, we have to create it post-firing. The color change is ferric oxide. Oxygenated, it is shades of orange/red, but cut off the oxygen & the iron in the ceramic turns dark gray to brown depending on reduced or neutral O2. 4/ #ceramics #archaeology

Knowing something in theory or even in practice in a different firing method doesn't mean it'll work. I put the red-hot pot on kiln furniture on a bed of dry sand (oven dried) in a stainless steel pot (I had bought for blackening ceramics with leaves) & closed the lid. 3/ #ceramics #archaeology

We do prefer to fire using wood in a dug fire pit, but sometimes that's not possible. We had one conference where we had to fire everything in non-optimal conditions a week before the conference because we had months of bad firing weather.

It Louisiana...

We bought this small kiln so we could fire small pots & pipes when under burn bans or it was too windy or wet. Today's firing was for 2 purposes: check a lower firing temp & figure out how to create a post-firing reduced environment to make the ceramics look more authentic.

Win on both. #ceramics

Hammond. Normally it would be loaded, but those 2 photos says it all. Not even any on the ground. I think the real young fruit fell off months ago.

It should be noted that Christopher Columbus never found or set foot in what is now the United States.

I read years ago that on his death bed he refused to admit that he did not find an ocean route to the East.

A tale of two white beads.

These are both made of Andalusia, Alabama, kaolin clay. The bottom one was fired at 900°C, while the top one was fired ay 860°C.

The clay had some minor veins of ferric oxide, so I assume the bottom bead had a little in the clay. #ceramics
