In my eyes, this is what the pinnacle of the traditional beat 'em up looks like. A classic experience modernized and almost perfected, one that manages to evolve each and every aspect of the genre in a very organic way, while looking absolutely stunning in the process.

And here I am, once again, gushing about one of the best beat 'em ups ever made and my new favorite roguelite of all time. The impeccable art and animations, the fast and varied combat, the plethora of interesting characters, deep world building... I just love this one so much.

- Anno because it bored me.
- BotW because 50 hours was enough for me
- Hollow Knight because I moved houses mid-playthrough and it ruined the flow
- Lords of Shadow because too many good games came out while I was playing it
Pretty good if I do say so myself.

Bringing even more of the excellent combat, engaging exploration, and irreverent dialogue featured in the first game, this one is the definition of a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." sequel, but with even more fun scenarios and over-the-top bad guys/gals to beat up.

A really interesting roguelike beat 'em up, with a relatively simple combat system, but that makes up for that with its referential sense of humor, multiple routes to take on each run, and some really engaging boss fights. Good game!

What I'm trying to say is: keep an open mind to new experiences; you never know when you'll stumble upon a new favorite.

Castle Crashers is a very funny game, with plenty of visual gags and quips sprinkled throughout. But it's also a really good beat 'em up, with plenty of variety, a really satisfying little combat system and some of the coolest boss fights in the genre.

The TakeOver is a game that proudly embraces its inspirations, yet still manages to forge its own identity thanks to a unique and striking presentation, and a very satisfying combat system.
There are also explosions. Lots and lots of explosions. So, you know, good stuff.

So, to celebrate, I'm going to dedicate this week to some of my favorite modern beat 'em ups, highlighting one per day until the big day. We'll have turtles, knights, angry teenagers, and a whole lot of rage in the streets. Let's do this!

Cheaper than MK1:DE itself
This show had a surprisingly solid lineup of games back in the day, courtesy of Konami back when it was at its peak. And among them was a really fun and chaotic compilation of sports games, and one of my favorite multiplayer titles from that era.

Today I stumbled opon this roguelike beat 'em up called Streets of Red, and turns out it is made by the same studio as Double Dragon Gaiden, one of my favorites of all time.
Needless to say, I spent the whole afternoon playing it 🔥
