THREAD: In 2013-14 I taught 5th graders to play violin. The school district setup was bonkers but: I had no curriculum requirements, no tests to prep students for. Didn’t even have to give students grades! So I could teach at the pace they needed. And experiment in my first year teaching.

I love Katherine Addison’s books about Thara Celehar for a lot of reasons. One is that THE GRIEF OF STONES (book 2) is partly a fantasy about a well-funded university history department, in a context where it doesn’t actually feel like it’s saying “look at this nice thing you probably can’t have”

I’ve known some about the Shackleton Endurance expedition for a while, but listening to @emmasouthon.bsky.social and @j9andif.bsky.social talk about it on the History Is Sexy podcast was a fantastic reminder that failing to achieve your goal may be very far away from the worst case scenario, heh
