Games help us understand life, @annieduke.com tells @jennygrankin.bsky.social—the best games involve the two things that characterize life and provide the context for the decisions we make—skill, and luck:

Persistence is not always a virtue.

A good heuristic: when you consider quitting is likely the point at which you should quit, @annieduke.com tells @jennygrankin.bsky.social:

“For something as important as decision making, we spend remarkably little time teaching people how to do it.”

Matt Grawitch’s latest post builds on @annieduke.com’s framework, suggesting it embraces more explicitly real life emotion, complexity and change:

It may go against your intuition, but good decision making is not measured by its *outcome*—it’s a case of adopting a sound framework as a basis for the *process*, argues @annieduke.com: buff.ly/ciaElUt

One thing to learn from Thinking in Bets by @annieduke.com is how every product-related decision is a bet.

Building a feature, defining experiments, scoping MVP, you name it.

What follows, in the vast majority of cases, smaller bet will be smarter.

In other words: build less.

“When we finally quit, we realize we should have done it long ago.” ~ @annieduke.com

It always surprises me in how many contexts it stands true.

Pulling a plug on a new product idea? Check.
Finally, letting an underperformed go? Check.
Heck, my marriage... Check.

The highest compliment from someone who disagrees with you is not “You were right.” It’s “You made me think.”

Good arguments help us recognize complexity where we once saw simplicity.

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It’s to promote critical thinking.
