There is a chapter about it in my translation of Antonio Scurati's "M. Son of the Century" (‪@harpercollins.bsky.social‬). The chapter is titled "The Corpse. Macchia della Quarantella,

This from Son of the Century on Mussolini and the rise of fascism in Italy is a one-century-earlier blueprint for the January 6 insurrection, Trump pardoning those responsible and claiming to support police/law enforcement while promoting thugs.

Unspeakable atrocities, unimag-inble barbarities, widespread suffering. And to top it all off, a fire at the Chamber of Labor, the third in a row, and Brandimarte's squadristi, as ecstatic as hounds at the scent of blood, hoot and sing and dance against the reddish background of the flames.
The Duce immediately repudiated them. Prime Minister Benita Musolini called the massacre "a discredit to the human race," and threatened punishment to make an example of them. However, on December 23rd, three days later, he proclaimed a general amnesty for politically motivated blood crimes committed for "national ends" On December 28th, with Christmas over, he issued the first decree to the Council of Ministers for the creation of a Voluntary Militia for National Security. Which is to say that, in order to avert nore of their transgressions, Brandimarte's killers had to become a state institution, a kind of national guard, the foundation of the armed nation. That's how the Duce intends to cauterize the wound.
The paradox does not escape him, nor does the absurdity. But you have to be realistic: when a group comes to power it has the obligation to fortify itself, to defend itself against everyone else, and besides, the country is tired. Italy has just started breathing again for having narrowly escaped after the agonizing wait for the march on Rome. Now the time of disorder, of reckless strikes, of skull bashing must end. At any cost, even at the cost of promoting criminals to gendarmes. Moreover, it wouldn't be the first time.
Fascism in power must relieve Italy of the burden of its own threat.
